ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia and Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defense cooperation, highlighting the importance of strategic partnerships among ASEAN members in maintaining regional peace, stability, and security.
Indonesian Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto, representing Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, received a courtesy visit from General Ukris Boontanondha, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, at the Ministry of Defense headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The meeting marked General Ukris’ official introduction following his appointment as Thailand’s highest-ranking military commander. During the visit, he expressed appreciation for the longstanding friendship and close defense relations between Indonesia and Thailand, while reaffirming his commitment to further expanding bilateral military cooperation.
Deputy Minister Donny congratulated General Ukris on his appointment and emphasized that Indonesia and Thailand share common interests in safeguarding regional stability amid increasingly complex geopolitical and security challenges.
“Indonesia and Thailand have a shared responsibility to contribute to regional peace and stability. Strengthening defense cooperation is essential in addressing current and future security challenges,” Donny said.
The two countries agreed to continue enhancing defense collaboration through stronger information exchange, joint military exercises, and capacity-building programs. These initiatives are expected to further strengthen interoperability between the two armed forces while supporting ASEAN’s efforts to maintain a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region.
As two long-standing ASEAN partners, Indonesia and Thailand continue to play an important role in promoting dialogue, cooperation, and confidence-building measures within the region.
The meeting underscored Jakarta and Bangkok’s shared commitment to deepening their strategic defense partnership and contributing to a more secure and resilient Southeast Asia.
The meeting was attended by senior Indonesian defense officials, including the Director General for Defense Strategy, the Deputy for Geostrategy of the National Defense Council, and representatives from the Defense Capability Directorate. (AT Network)
