ASIATODAY.ID, TOKYO – Japan is accelerating its position in the global artificial intelligence race with the development of a massive AI Factory worth 387.3 billion yen (approximately US$2.4 billion) in partnership with US semiconductor giant Nvidia.
The facility will serve as the computing backbone of Japan’s strategic FRONTia program, an ambitious national initiative focused on developing next-generation robotics, industrial automation, and digital twin technologies.
The project will be developed by Japanese technology consortium Noetra, led by major corporations including SoftBank Corp., Sony, NEC, and Honda, alongside 44 other companies and organizations.
Powered by Nvidia’s latest AI infrastructure, the facility will utilize the Nvidia DSX data center platform and the advanced Vera Rubin NVL72 architecture, designed to support the training of large-scale AI models with trillions of parameters.
Building Japan’s AI Sovereignty
The AI Factory is expected to operate with a capacity of 140 megawatts and will be equipped with approximately:
– 27,500 Rubin GPUs
– 13,750 Vera CPUs
– 382 Vera Rubin NVL72 server racks
– High-speed networking powered by Nvidia Spectrum-X Ethernet technology
The massive computing infrastructure highlights Japan’s ambition to secure its own AI capabilities amid intensifying global competition among the United States, China, and other technology powers.
The investment is expected to expand significantly over the coming years, with the long-term roadmap reaching 1 trillion yen (around US$6.1 billion).
Rather than functioning as a conventional data center, the facility is designed as a foundation for physical AI — a new generation of artificial intelligence capable of interacting with and understanding the real world.
From Digital Intelligence to Real-World AI
Unlike traditional AI systems focused primarily on text, images, or online applications, physical AI combines advanced models with robotics, sensors, and real-world environments.
Through the FRONTia initiative, Japan aims to develop AI systems capable of controlling robots, optimizing industrial operations, and supporting complex environments such as factories and hospitals.
The Japanese government plans to make pretrained AI models available to domestic developers and companies, allowing them to customize the technology for sectors including manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and automation.
The development roadmap includes:
– 2026: Advanced AI reasoning models.
– 2028: Omni-modal AI capable of understanding text, video, and audio simultaneously.
– 2030: Real-world AI systems with spatial intelligence for robots operating in factories, hospitals, and human environments.
Japan Targets Global Robot Leadership
The initiative aligns with Japan’s broader robotics strategy, which seeks to strengthen the country’s position in the global robot industry.
Tokyo aims to capture more than 30 percent of the global AI robotics market by 2040, with the sector projected to reach an estimated value of US$133 billion.
For Japan, AI infrastructure is no longer simply a technology investment — it has become a strategic national asset essential for economic competitiveness and industrial security.
