ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK — Indonesia has taken a new step in strengthening its role in global governance after officially beginning its mandate as a member of the UN Board of Auditors (UNBoA) for the 2026–2032 period.
Represented by the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK RI), Indonesia will contribute to enhancing transparency, accountability, and effectiveness within the United Nations system through independent external audits of UN organizations.
The official handover ceremony was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where BPK RI Chairperson Dr. Isma Yatun received the mandate alongside Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, who accompanied the Indonesian delegation.
Indonesia succeeds the China National Audit Office as the representative of the Asia-Pacific region in UNBoA. During its six-year term, BPK RI will work together with the Supreme Audit Institutions of France and Brazil to review financial management, operational performance, and governance practices across various UN entities.
UNBoA is a three-member body appointed to conduct external audits of United Nations organizations and provide independent recommendations to the UN General Assembly. Its role is crucial in ensuring that resources managed by the global organization are used effectively, transparently, and responsibly.
Indonesia was elected to UNBoA by consensus during the Fifth Committee session of the UN General Assembly on November 7, 2025, following a diplomatic campaign initiated in 2020 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and BPK RI to secure international support.
The appointment marks international recognition of Indonesia’s institutional capacity and BPK RI’s credibility as a Supreme Audit Institution with global standards.
BPK RI Chairperson Dr. Isma Yatun emphasized that Indonesia’s participation in UNBoA represents an opportunity to contribute to improving the quality of global governance.
She highlighted the importance of maintaining independence, continuity, and audit quality to deliver meaningful contributions for the United Nations and its member states.
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said Indonesia’s mandate in UNBoA is aligned with Jakarta’s commitment to supporting reforms within the multilateral system.
According to him, Indonesia’s role in the UN audit body reflects the country’s broader effort to strengthen international cooperation and promote more effective global institutions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York, will continue supporting BPK RI in carrying out its responsibilities during the mandate period.
Indonesia’s new role in UNBoA adds to its expanding international engagement, reinforcing its position as an active partner in shaping a more transparent, accountable, and effective global governance framework. (AT Network)
