ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia’s central bank has entered a sudden leadership transition after Governor Perry Warjiyo resigned from his position, with Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti appointed as interim governor to ensure policy continuity and maintain economic stability.
Bank Indonesia (BI) confirmed that Perry Warjiyo stepped down voluntarily from his role on July 25, 2026, citing personal reasons. His resignation was submitted to President Prabowo Subianto in accordance with the provisions of Indonesia’s central bank law.
The announcement immediately attracted attention as Bank Indonesia plays a critical role in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, overseeing monetary policy, maintaining rupiah stability, safeguarding the payment system, and supporting financial sector resilience.
A Sudden Leadership Change at a Critical Time
The transition comes at a time when Indonesia continues to navigate a complex global economic environment, including geopolitical uncertainty, volatile financial markets, and challenges facing emerging economies.
Following a meeting of the Board of Governors on July 26, Bank Indonesia appointed Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as acting governor in accordance with Article 50 paragraph (2) of the Bank Indonesia Law.
BI emphasized that the leadership change would not affect the central bank’s operations or policy direction.
“Bank Indonesia continues to ensure the implementation of its duties and authorities to maintain rupiah stability, preserve the stability of the payment system, and contribute to financial system stability in support of sustainable economic growth,” the institution said on July 27, 2026.
Destry Damayanti Takes Interim Leadership
Destry Damayanti will lead Bank Indonesia during the transition period until a permanent governor is appointed through the established legal process.
As Senior Deputy Governor, Destry has been closely involved in Indonesia’s monetary and financial policy framework. Her experience in economics, financial markets, and institutional coordination is expected to provide stability during the leadership transition.
The appointment is also aimed at maintaining confidence among investors and financial markets, as Bank Indonesia remains a key institution influencing Indonesia’s economic outlook.
Perry Warjiyo’s Legacy at Bank Indonesia
Perry Warjiyo served as Governor of Bank Indonesia since 2018 and led the institution through several major global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation pressures, global interest rate changes, and financial market uncertainty.
During his tenure, BI strengthened monetary policy coordination, expanded digital payment transformation, and worked closely with the government to support economic recovery and sustainable growth.
His departure marks a new chapter for Indonesia’s central bank as the country seeks to maintain economic momentum, attract investment, and strengthen its position in the global economy.
Market Stability Remains the Priority
Bank Indonesia reiterated its commitment to good governance, professionalism, and coordination with the government while carrying out its mandate.
The central bank said it would continue creating a stable economic environment that supports the real sector, investment, and job creation.
For Indonesia, the immediate priority is ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining confidence in monetary policy and the resilience of Southeast Asia’s largest economy. (AT Network)
