ASIATODAY.ID, LONDON — Indonesia and the United Kingdom are strengthening their strategic defence partnership by expanding cooperation beyond traditional security ties into defence education, strategic research, technological innovation, and aerospace development.
The growing partnership was highlighted during a working visit by Inspector General of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Irjen Kemhan RI) Lieutenant General TNI Rui F.G.P. Duarte to the United Kingdom, where he held strategic discussions at King’s College London and represented the Indonesian Defence Minister at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026.
The engagement reflects Indonesia’s broader effort to build future defence capabilities through knowledge development, innovation, and international collaboration, while reinforcing its role as a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific.
Advancing Defence Education and Strategic Studies
During his visit to King’s College London on Sunday (26 July 2026), Lieutenant General Rui F.G.P. Duarte met with Professor Wyn Bowen, Head of the School of Security Studies at KCL, to discuss opportunities for expanding cooperation in defence education, research, and human resource development.
The discussions covered strategic fields shaping the future of security, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), military psychology, intelligence, geopolitics, international relations, and ASEAN–Europe defence and security studies.
Indonesia and King’s College London also explored opportunities to strengthen academic collaboration through curriculum development, joint international programmes, research partnerships, and defence education forums aimed at enhancing knowledge exchange between institutions.
King’s College London is globally recognised as one of the leading centres for war, defence, and security studies, particularly through its renowned War Studies programme. The institution maintains strong links with major strategic organisations, including the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS), International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Chatham House, and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
Indonesia’s Defence University (Unhan RI) has also established cooperation with King’s College London in defence and security studies, regional policy, public policy, and clinical health research.
The partnership highlights Indonesia’s commitment to developing a modern defence ecosystem that combines military capability with academic excellence, research capacity, and technological advancement.
Strengthening Defence Industry Cooperation
Indonesia’s engagement with the United Kingdom continued through participation in the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, one of the world’s most influential aerospace and defence exhibitions.
Held from 20–24 July 2026 in the United Kingdom, the event brought together governments, aerospace manufacturers, defence companies, and technology leaders to showcase the future of aviation, security, and advanced mobility.
Representing the Indonesian Defence Minister, Lieutenant General Rui F.G.P. Duarte attended the exhibition to strengthen Indonesia–UK defence cooperation and expand engagement with global aerospace and defence industries.
The exhibition showcased emerging technologies in next-generation mobility, autonomous systems, and sustainable aviation solutions.
Among the featured innovations was the Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat autonomous drone programme, reflecting the growing importance of unmanned systems and advanced technologies in future defence operations.
Farnborough Airshow 2026 also highlighted developments in sustainable aviation, including the Airbus A350-1000 flight demonstration using a 30 percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend.
The aircraft demonstration showcased advances in modern aerospace engineering, including advanced manoeuvrability, short take-off capability, and steep climb performance, illustrating the rapid transformation of global aviation technology.
