ASIATODAY.ID, TEHRAN – The bombing of a girls’ primary school in southern Iran has triggered global outrage, with UNESCO declaring the attack a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
The strike, which reportedly occurred during US and Israeli military operations on Saturday, destroyed a primary school for girls in Minab. Around 150 people were killed and nearly 100 others injured, with many of the victims believed to be students.
In a statement posted on social media, UNESCO expressed deep alarm over the continued military escalation into Sunday. The agency stressed that schools are protected spaces under international humanitarian law and must never be targeted.
“Attacks against educational institutions endanger students and teachers and undermine the right to education,” UNESCO stated on March 1, 2026.
The agency joined other United Nations bodies in condemning both the initial military strikes and Iran’s retaliatory attacks across parts of the Middle East, warning that civilians are paying the highest price in the escalating conflict.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also voiced concern over the spiraling violence, emphasizing the urgent need to uphold international law and protect non-combatants.
Malala: “Heartbroken and Appalled”
United Nations Messenger of Peace and Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai said she was “heartbroken and appalled” by the bombing.
“The killing of civilians, especially children, is unconscionable, and I condemn it unequivocally,” she wrote in a social media post.
Malala called for an immediate end to the escalating violence and urged accountability for those responsible.
“All states and parties must uphold their obligations under international law to protect civilians and safeguard schools. Every child deserves to live and learn in peace.”
Malala became a global symbol of the fight for girls’ education after surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012 for opposing restrictions on female education in Pakistan.
The attack has intensified international concern over the protection of civilians in modern warfare. When schools—symbols of hope and the future—become targets, the consequences reverberate far beyond the battlefield. (AT Network)
