ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The upcoming AsiaFlux Conference, scheduled for October 20–25, 2025, in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau, marks a significant milestone for Indonesia in strengthening its commitment to climate change mitigation.
With the theme “Nature-Based Solutions for Asia: From Advanced Science and Technology to Practices,” the conference will serve as a strategic platform for the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) to align visions and missions in formulating policies that advance nature-based solutions.
These solutions are key to driving climate action plans, ensuring sustainable forest and peatland ecosystem governance, and achieving Indonesia’s emission reduction targets.
“This conference provides a vital platform for scientists, policymakers, and global stakeholders to exchange knowledge, advance flux measurement technologies, and foster collaboration in ecosystem conservation and restoration through Nature-Based Solutions,” said Minister of Environment and Head of BPLH, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, October 16, 2025.
He emphasized the conference’s role in promoting cross-sector collaboration to address the increasingly urgent challenge of climate change.
Minister Hanif further noted, “The AsiaFlux 2025 Conference in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau, is a crucial moment to reaffirm Indonesia’s commitment to climate change mitigation, particularly in the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector.”
His attendance underscores the government’s strong role in supporting science-based policy implementation aimed at reducing carbon emissions and managing natural resources responsibly.
The AsiaFlux 2025 Conference also marks an important step toward accelerating Indonesia’s progress in achieving its FOLU Net Sink target and the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (E-NDC) under the Paris Agreement. Indonesia aims to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 31.89% through domestic efforts and 43.20% with international support by 2030.
Under the E-NDC, Indonesia targets an emission reduction of 358 million tons of CO₂-eq from the energy sector alone, while the FOLU sector aims to reduce emissions by 140 million tons of CO₂-eq by 2030—accounting for nearly 60% of the total national GHG reduction target through domestic initiatives.
Given the FOLU sector’s major contribution to national GHG emissions, this conference holds great relevance in advancing nature-based approaches to mitigate and minimize the adverse effects of climate change.
Through this platform, Indonesia reaffirms its commitment not only to strengthening ecosystem management but also to sharing best practices and innovative technologies in confronting global climate challenges.
The conference will gather over 350 participants from around the world, including scientists, academics, policymakers, and private sector representatives.
They will discuss key topics such as carbon dynamics, flux measurement, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, and sustainable ecosystem modeling. The event will also feature technical training sessions and an exhibition showcasing the latest technologies in carbon, water, and energy flux measurement, all of which are relevant to accelerating emission reductions.
Minister Hanif expressed his hope that through enriched discussions, shared innovations, and stronger collaborations, the conference would contribute to building a sustainable peatland ecosystem and a resilient future for all.
“We believe that by bringing together experts from across Asia and beyond, AsiaFlux 2025 will spark new discoveries, strengthen networks, and inspire actionable solutions for a sustainable future,” he said.
The participation of key policymakers, including representatives from KLH/BPLH, is crucial in reinforcing national policies that promote sustainable and inclusive natural resource management.
“Their support for research and implementation of Nature-Based Solutions in Indonesia and across Asia will significantly enhance ecosystem quality, strengthen climate change mitigation, and advance the achievement of our national goals under the Paris Agreement,” Minister Hanif concluded.
Through collaboration among government bodies, scientists, practitioners, private sectors, and civil society, the AsiaFlux 2025 Conference will serve as a milestone for Indonesia to demonstrate its leadership in global emission reduction and sustainable natural resource management.
The conference is not only a venue for introducing cutting-edge technologies but also a foundation for building lasting partnerships in ecosystem conservation and restoration across Indonesia and Asia.
With shared determination, Indonesia is set to take greater strides in advancing Nature-Based Solutions that bring positive global impact—solidifying its role as a regional leader in climate change mitigation. (AT Network)
