ASIATODAY.ID, BRIDGETOWN – Barbados, a country in the Caribbean, on Friday, April 19 2024 announced that it officially recognizes the state of Palestine. Barbados thus became the 11th member country of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to take this step.
“How can we say we want a two-state solution if we don’t recognize Palestine as a state,” said Barbados Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds.
Symmonds said the decision had no impact on Barbados’ relations with Israel.
He emphasized that the island nation has always maintained that there must be a two-state solution at the United Nations. At the same time, he criticized the fact that Barbados had never recognized Palestine before.
“I think it’s a mistake we’ve made over the years and we have to correct it,” he said.
“Now, we have officially contacted the State of Palestine to signal our intention to officially recognize them as a State,” he added. (ATN)
