ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) stated that of the five largest gas reserves found in the world, two of them are in Indonesia.

Indonesia’s gas potential is very large to be managed in the energy transition era.

“Natural gas resources in Indonesia are still abundant. We saw that last year there were five discoveries of the largest gas reserves in the world, of the five, two were in Indonesia,” said  Deputy for Finance and Commercialization of SKK Migas, Kurnia Chairi in the “2024 Natural Gas Forum Pre-Event” press conference at the SKK Migas office , Jakarta, Friday, June 14 2024.

Based on records from Wood Mackenzie, Rystad Energy and S&P Global, the two discoveries came from the North Ganal working area, the Geng North-1 well, East Kalimantan and the Layaran-1 exploration well in the South Andaman Block, 65 km off the northern coast of Sumatra.

These two gas fields have become significant discoveries for Indonesia, after the Abadi Field in the Masela Block, Maluku in 2000.

According to Kurnia, natural gas is an energy source that has a significant role in the energy transition era.

“The need for natural gas in Indonesia will also become greater in the future,” he said.

Currently, the need for natural gas on the island of Java has not been optimally met. For this reason, he hopes that there will be synergy between natural gas producers, midstream players, as well as buyers and users so that absorption can be more optimal.

“Indonesia has very good prospects because we see that our various gas sources are currently quite abundant. The hope is to support the achievement of the target of 12 billion cubic feet of gas per day to meet domestic demand,” he concluded. (ATN)
