ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The governments of Indonesia and France have agreed to collaborate in the field of energy transition.
This collaboration was marked by the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) and Implementing Agreement (IA) carried out by the Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana with Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) Country Director Yann Martress in Jakarta, Friday, November 1 2024.
Dadan said that this partnership marks an important milestone in the collective efforts of Indonesia and France as partners in overcoming the challenges of climate change and the transition towards a sustainable energy future.
“As a country that is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, Indonesia recognizes the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, diversify energy and accelerate the energy transition. To achieve these ambitious goals, it is hoped that collaboration with global partners will enable Indonesia to access technology advanced energy, financial resources in financing the energy transition, and improvements in technical expertise,” he said.
Dadan also appreciated AFD which has expertise in sustainable development and green financing in the AFD initiative to support Indonesia in achieving a sustainable energy transition, as well as the European Union which has supported Indonesia’s efforts in the energy transition and provided technical support to increase the competency of Human Resources in achieving Net targets. Zero Emissions (NZE).
AFD Country Director, Yann Martress, said that this collaboration program aims to mainstream the energy transition concept in various policy initiatives, as well as ensuring alignment with energy transition priorities in Indonesia.
“The signing of this agreement marks a long-term partnership in supporting Indonesia’s ambition to achieve NZE, and reaffirms the commitment to work together towards a greener and more resilient energy sector in Indonesia, as well as responding to social, environmental and economic challenges,” he stressed.
The European Union Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei, Denis Chaibi, said that the European Union was happy to provide grants through AFD to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to carry out a green and clean transition in Indonesia, which has large natural resources, such as nickel reserves and potential great geothermal heat.
“With this potential, Indonesia is a key player in the world’s green transition. We are very happy to be able to partner with Indonesia and AFD in this effort,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy French Ambassador to Indonesia, Laurent Legodec, revealed that this collaboration between Indonesia and France could utilize the strengths of each country to move towards a sustainable and just energy future.
“By increasing cooperation in the energy transition, we can not only drive technological progress but also significant economic growth, job creation and energy security,” said Laurent.
For your information, this LoI and IA include cooperation in the form of energy transition reform within the framework of the Policy Based Loan Affordable and Sustainable Energy Transition (PBL ASET) Program and a road map towards NZE; Study and training for critical minerals; Implementation of the Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) framework in the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; As well as other areas of cooperation that are mutually agreed in writing between both parties.
