ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The incident of the explosion of a nickel smelter belonging to a Chinese company in Indonesia has repeated itself. This time, the explosion occurred at a nickel smelter owned by PT. Kalimantan Ferro Industri (KFI), on Thursday, May 16 2024.
Member of Commission VII of the Indonesian Parliament, Mulyanto asked the Government to immediately conduct a feasibility audit of all smelters of Chinese companies. The government should not delay this feasibility audit any longer so that more victims do not fall.
“I think that smelter accidents often occur because the government is slow to audit all smelters of Chinese companies. Since the first smelter furnace explosion occurred at PT Gunbuster Nickel Industries (GNI) last year, the Government has been actively carrying out audits of all smelters. “Including supervising the implementation of the Occupational Security and Safety (K3) program and the reliability of work tools and facilities used during production,” said Mulyanto, Sunday, May 19 2024.
He added that the repeated incidents of smelter explosions reflect that the business governance of the smelter industry is not as good as the Government claims.
Therefore, he urged the Government to be firm and immediately audit all existing smelters and evaluate the governance of the smelter industry, including the distance of smelter buildings to residential areas.
“The distance between the smelter building and the settlement is only 21 meters. This is very risky. “Why can you get permission,” he said.
The government, continued Mulyanto, needs to ensure that the smelter industry business permits granted are actually carried out safely and securely for workers and the community. Don’t just chase investment broadcasts.
“We are worried that with the various conveniences and incentives, both fiscal and non-fiscal, provided by the government to investors, instead of running industrial businesses well, these smelter companies are actually being negligent and careless in carrying out industrial governance. In the end, the victims are the workers and the community. “The government should not hesitate to revoke permits for smelter industries that are proven to be in violation,” he stressed.
Until now, the Sangasanga Sector Police are still investigating the PT KFI nickel smelter explosion incident.
As a result of this incident, 3 people were injured and are currently being treated at the Sangasanga Community Health Center.
“As a result of the explosion, the logistics warehouse located next to the waste pond caught fire,” said Kutai Kartanegara Resort Police Chief, AKBP Heri Rusyaman. (ATN)
