Fiji Faces Rising Climate Threats as Island Nation Builds Resilience

ASIATODAY.ID, BEIJING — Fiji is accelerating efforts to protect its economy and communities from growing climate threats as the Pacific island nation strengthens its resilience against extreme weather events, environmental pressures and global economic uncertainty.

The move is supported by a new USD230 million reform financing package from international development partners, including USD80 million in sovereign-backed financing approved by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

For Fiji, the initiative represents a strategic effort to strengthen national systems, improve disaster preparedness and secure long-term economic stability amid increasing climate-related risks.

As a small island developing state, Fiji remains highly exposed to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels, coastal risks and extreme weather events that can damage infrastructure, disrupt livelihoods and place pressure on public finances.

The financing program combines immediate budget support with policy reforms designed to improve the country’s ability to respond to future shocks while creating stronger foundations for sustainable growth.

By 2028, the program is expected to expand disaster-risk-reduction planning across communities, strengthen public financial management for climate and emergency preparedness, and increase access to regulated financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The reforms will also support digital payment expansion, simplify regulatory requirements for low-risk tourism businesses and improve social programs related to child nutrition and physical activity.

“AIIB’s financing provides timely support for Fiji’s reform agenda while helping strengthen the systems that underpin long-term economic resilience,” said Kim-See Lim, AIIB’s Chief Investment Officer for Public Sector (Region 1) and Financial Institutions and Funds (Global) Clients.

She added that AIIB remains committed to helping member countries strengthen resilience, advance sustainable development and respond effectively to evolving global challenges.

Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, welcomed the growing partnership with international development institutions, saying the support would help advance economic reforms and strengthen the country’s ability to withstand future disruptions.

“This support complements our commitment to prudent fiscal management, climate resilience and creating a more enabling environment for businesses and investment,” he said.

The program aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025–2029 and Vision 2050, reinforcing the country’s commitment to building a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable future.

Beyond Fiji, the initiative reflects a broader challenge facing Pacific island nations, where climate adaptation has become a central priority as countries seek to protect communities, economies and critical infrastructure from escalating environmental risks.

Established in 2016, AIIB is a multilateral development bank focused on financing sustainable infrastructure across Asia and beyond. The institution has 111 approved members worldwide, USD100 billion in capital, and maintains AAA credit ratings from major international rating agencies. (AT Network)
