ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – A big breakthrough in green energy came from Indonesia. The country is starting to use hydrogen as an alternative fuel.
PT PLN (Persero) inaugurated the Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) and Green Hydrogen Plant (GHP) Kamojang Geothermal Power Plant pilot projects simultaneously on Wednesday, February 21 2024. The inauguration of HRS and GHP makes PLN a pioneer in building a hydrogen ecosystem simultaneously end to end in Indonesia as an environmentally friendly alternative fuel, while supporting the government’s target to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060.
Director General of Electricity, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jisman Hutajulu said, the operation of HRS in Senayan as the first in Indonesia shows real work and concrete proof of hydrogen energy is a necessity for Indonesia.
“Hydrogen will play a strategic role in the global transition era. Hydrogen is the only zero-carbon energy carrier other than electricity, which is being seriously considered for low-carbon transportation, decarbonization in the industrial sector, generation and heat supply,” said Jisman.
Jisman continued, in Indonesia hydrogen is expected to be one of the contributors to the energy transition and to have an important role in decarbonizing the global energy system, and as one of the Government’s main strategies in implementing the roadmap towards carbon neutrality by 2060.
“Indonesia has large, widespread and diverse new renewable energy potential. The total potential reaches 3,689 GW and has the potential to be used in the production of green hydrogen as an energy reserve/storage. Apart from that, hydrogen can also be used in various sectors for decarbonization purposes in the sector “which are impossible or difficult to reduce (hard to abate sectors) such as long distance transportation, shipping, aviation, steel production, industrial heating and manufacturing,” said Jisman.
Meanwhile, the President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo stated that green transportation is currently developing very rapidly, one of which is supporting the current transformation of electric vehicle (EV)-based green transportation.
“PLN supports the transformation of green transportation based on EVs. We have built an EV digital services system from home charging, SPKLU. Then we carry out simulations, support its operationalization, support the transformation of transportation, both EVs and fuel cells,” said Darmawan.
Darmawan added, several months ago PLN had inaugurated hydrogen production in Muara Tawar, Muara Karang and also Tanjung Priok, then within 1 month PLN also produced it in 21 PLN power plants with a total production of 199 tons per year and was already green hydrogen.
“We don’t stop there. We want to try green hydrogen from renewable energy production. We even built hydrogen production at the Kamojang geothermal power plant. There is an additional 1.43 tons per year. So a total of 203 tons of green hydrogen per year from our 22 plants “which is produced by PLN. The need for hydrogen for power plant cooling is only 75 tons. This means there will be 128 tons of green hydrogen per year that can be used for the transportation sector,” added Darmawan.
The use of hydrogen as a fuel has also previously been pioneered by PT Pertamina (Persero) through Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) which has carried out Ground Breaking HRS at the Daan Mogot Public Fuel Filling Station, Jakarta.
Daan Mogot Station will be the first integrated energy refueling station in Indonesia, which will provide three types of fuel in one filling station, namely oil, gas and hydrogen. With the High-Speed Hydrogen Refueling Station concept, this HRS will be able to refill hydrogen on a commercial scale with a refill time of less than five minutes.
HRS Senayan is a hydrogen refueling station which has 3 types of services, namely, refueling services for hydrogen cars, refueling services for electric cars and a hydrogen center as a training center. Currently the HRS used is based on a pressure of 350 bar and will later be added to an HRS based on 700 bar so that it can increasingly serve the needs of hydrogen-based vehicles.
The use of hydrogen as an industrial gas includes cooling generators in power plants. Apart from that, hydrogen can also be used as alternative energy as fuel for transportation and electricity generation. (AT Network)
