ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government has officially designated 22 mining commodities as strategic minerals.
This determination is contained in the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 69.K/MB.01/MEM.B/2024 concerning Determination of Commodity Types Included in the Strategic Mineral Classification, which was signed on April 1 2024.
In this regulation, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, included nickel and tin as strategic minerals.
“In the context of optimizing the downstreaming of minerals in the country for the development of strategic industries and supporting the use of minerals to increase Indonesia’s competitiveness at the national and international levels, it is necessary to determine the criteria and classification of minerals that are classified as strategic minerals,” as written in the regulation, quoted on Saturday, April 6, 2024.
Strategic minerals have strategic value as raw materials in optimizing domestic mineral downstreaming, for the development of strategic industries that support increasing the competitiveness of global trade, state income and the national economy.
This type of mineral is a raw material for strategic industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and medical devices (health industry), transportation equipment industry (electric vehicle industry), energy generation industry (solar cell industry). Then the capital goods industry, components, auxiliary materials and industrial services, electronics and telematics/ICT industry, basic metal industry and non-metallic minerals (defense industry).
This regulation can be a reference for Ministries/Institutions and Provincial Governments to provide regulations and policies regarding the management and trade of mineral mining as well as mineral-based industries and associated minerals, including residual processing and refining products.
This regulation can also be a consideration in issuing business permits for mineral exploitation to be taken into consideration in international cooperation policies.
