ASIATODAY.ID, BATULICIN — Indonesia has launched construction of a new ammunition manufacturing plant as the government steps up efforts to strengthen the country’s defense industrial base, expand domestic production capacity, and reduce reliance on imported military supplies.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin on Saturday, July 4 officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the new PT Pindad facility in Batulicin, South Kalimantan. Once completed, the plant is expected to increase Indonesia’s ammunition production capacity and reinforce the long-term resilience of the country’s military logistics network.
The project forms part of Indonesia’s broader defense modernization strategy, which aims to expand local manufacturing capabilities, strengthen strategic industries, and improve military readiness through greater self-sufficiency in defense production.
PT Pindad President Director Sigit P. Santosa said the new facility would enhance the company’s capacity to meet national defense requirements while improving the competitiveness of Indonesia’s strategic manufacturing sector.
Sjafrie said the project reflects close cooperation between the central government, regional authorities, the Indonesian Armed Forces, PT Pindad, and industry partners. He described the collaboration as essential to accelerating the development of a stronger and more sustainable national defense industrial ecosystem.
Beyond its strategic military role, the factory is expected to deliver wider economic benefits for South Kalimantan by creating jobs, strengthening local supply chains, developing skilled workers, and attracting new industrial investment.
The groundbreaking marks another milestone in Indonesia’s drive to build a modern, self-reliant, and globally competitive defense industry capable of supporting national security while contributing to long-term industrial and economic growth. (AT Network)
