ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government will soon form the Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Organization (NEPIO). This organization will be responsible for coordinating the accelerated development of nuclear power plants in Indonesia.
Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eniya Listiani Dewi said that the commitment to establish this implementing agency will be declared during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) agenda in the next few days.
“Next week we will commit at the IAEA, in Vienna, Austria that we will form NEPIO,” said Eniya in his office, Monday, September 9 2024.
Eniya said that NEPIO would later become a supervisor in domestic nuclear development as a source of electrical energy.
The plan is that this nuclear power plant will launch in 2032.
“In the General National Electricity Plan, nuclear will be included in 2032 at 250 MW, where it will be, is still being discussed. “NEPIO is for implementation because it is an organization, supervising nuclear implementation,” he said.
According to Eniya, NEPIO will be chaired directly by the president and the position of daily chairman will be occupied by the minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. Then, there are also several working groups to identify nuclear development plans.
Furthermore, Eniya said, the formation of NEPIO is not an obligation for countries that will develop nuclear.
“But NEPIO is the organization we need. Because the construction of a nuclear plant takes not one cabinet period, but two periods, around 9 years. “At the very least, nuclear plants can go on the grid in 2032,” said Eniya.
Previously, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana said that of the 16 requirements for operating nuclear power plants, Indonesia only needed to complete two more requirements.
According to Dadan, to date, public acceptance of the development of nuclear power plants has exceeded 50%.
Regarding the development of nuclear technology, Dadan said, the Indonesian government had communicated with Russia, Japan, South Korea and the United States (US).
“Communication with Russia has been going on for a long time, we also communicate with Japan, Korea and US. We open all communications, and when the time comes we will choose the best,” he said. (ATN)
