ASIATODAY.ID, BALI – The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is ready to launch a Ocean accounts to support data-based sustainable marine and fisheries governance.

Implementation of this marine resources balance is considered urgent for archipelagic countries, including Indonesia.

“Currently the world is facing the same challenges in overcoming global warming, overfishing, marine pollution, conservation of endangered species, sustainable fisheries development, and management of large marine areas. Ocean accounts have an important role in responding to these challenges,” said the Secretary General Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Prof. Rudy Heriyanto Adi Nugroho at the 5th Global Dialogue on Sustainable Ocean Development in Denpasar, Bali, Wednesday, July 3 2024.

The launch of the Indonesian Ocean accounts is planned at the peak of The 5th Global Dialogue on Sustainable Ocean Development which took place on July 5. The event was attended by at least six ministers of island countries, representatives of 34 countries, international and local research institutions, and private parties who are members of the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) organization.

According to Rudy, the Ocean accounts is a new instrument in sustainable marine governance. For this reason, it is important to hold a global dialogue as a means of exchanging information, knowledge, and aligning views in preparing marine resource balances with best practices.

In Indonesia itself, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has been developing Ocean accounts since 2021 in a number of conservation areas and fisheries areas.

“In the practice of Ocean accounts, the main thing is to create a paradigm shift in data-based marine governance, sustainable marine management for a healthy, productive and inclusive future, as well as accelerating international cooperation to realize a sustainable marine economy,” he explained.

In line with Rudy, GOAP Director Eliza Northop acknowledged the threats currently being faced by the ocean due to high levels of exploitation and pollution. For this reason, joint efforts are needed to protect the sea, especially as the level of dependence on the sea is increasingly high.

The existence of a Ocean accounts is considered to support the use of the sea and its resources in a more responsible manner. Moreover, Indonesia is a country that is a model in preparing Ocean accounts.

“With knowledge, experience and data, we can answer many challenges in marine governance. Indonesia is a global example, and I hope we will get a lot of information about these things here,” said Eliza Northop.

For information, the Ocean accounts is a collection of information in the form of maps, data, statistics and indicators about the marine and coastal environment, which is structured, consistent and comparable. This includes information regarding social conditions, economic activities, and the supply chain flow of seafood suppliers.

Marine resource balances are used to measure the status and monetary value of marine assets, measure the flow of goods and services from the sea to the economy, measure the impact of economic activities on marine ecosystems, improve the quality of governance and policies (spatial planning, conservation, investment, participation), monitor , tracking and reporting achievements/performance.
