ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia has succeeded in creating a major breakthrough in the green energy transition in the aviation industry.
Pertamina succeeded in bringing Garuda Indonesia to fly commercial aircraft using environmentally friendly fuel Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) or Bioavtur. This flight is from Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang) to Adi Soemarmo Airport (Surakarta) and returns to Jakarta on Friday 28 October 2023.
This environmentally friendly Bioavtur fuel is proof of the collaborative contribution of State-Owned Enterprises to efforts to reduce emissions and support the achievement of the Net Zero Emission target.
Pertamina’s SVP Research & Technology Innovation, Oki Muraza, explained that this Garuda Indonesia commercial flight was the first commercial flight in Indonesia to use Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) or Bioavtur.
“Another milestone in Indonesia’s journey will be realized. On October 27 2023 it will be recorded in the history of this Republic,” he was quoted as saying on Saturday (28/10/2023).
Oki explained that Pertamina continues to strive to create a sustainable industry.
There are a number of sectors that are very difficult to carry out the energy transition, these sectors include construction, steel production and aviation.
However, with Pertamina’s efforts supported by many parties, this transition effort towards clean energy in the aviation sector can be carried out by producing bioavtur or Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
How is SAF produced?
According to Oki, SAF can be produced according to local natural resource potential.
For countries that have abundant vegetable oils, the route chosen is hydrogenation and isomerization or popularly known as HEFA which is Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids.
However, if vegetable oil is not available, SAF can be produced from alcohol by a process called alcohol-to-jet (ATJ). In this process, alcohol is converted into olefins, then polymerized and the next process is hydrogenation.
Meanwhile, for countries that only have wood, there are two options that can be implemented.
First, wood can be processed into alcohol and then follow the ATJ route. Second, the wood is processed into the gas phase by gasification, then the syngas is processed into long chain hydrocarbons by Fischer Tropsch.
“With the largest potential for vegetable oil on Planet Earth, Indonesia is now able to produce SAF using the hydrogenation route. Next, we will continue to develop Isomerization so that the quality of SAF is even more excellent,” explained Oki.
Previously, Garuda Indonesia operated a commercial flight with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Bioavtur J2.4 on Friday 27 October 2023. This flight is the first commercial flight using bioavtur fuel in Indonesia and is also the first commercial flight in the world to use renewable energy fuel based on palm kernel oil.
Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiaputra explained that it is an honor for Garuda Indonesia to have the opportunity to continue to provide the best contribution to the nation through various sustainable initiatives, and to be at the forefront in supporting efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
“One of them is by operating commercial flights using J2.4 bioavtur fuel.” explained Irfan quoted, Saturday (28/10/2023).
Use Boeing 737-800NG
For your information, the flight operated by a Boeing 737-800NG (PK-GFX) fleet departed from Jakarta with flight number GA-1547 at 15.00 LT and arrived at Adi Soemarmo International Airport, Solo at 16.20 LT.
As for the reverse route, the plane departs from Solo with flight number GA-2547 at 17.50 LT and arrives at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta at 19.05 LT. (AT Network)
