ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia and Singapore signed 26 strategic agreements on Monday as President Prabowo Subianto hosted Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong for the annual Indonesia–Singapore Leaders’ Retreat, underscoring both countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation in energy, investment, the digital economy, defense and regional resilience.
The agreements reflect a broad effort by Southeast Asia’s two closely connected economies to strengthen long-term collaboration amid rising geopolitical uncertainty, the global energy transition and shifting supply chains.
Speaking after the meeting at Jakarta’s Merdeka Palace, President Prabowo said Indonesia and Singapore share a common interest in safeguarding regional stability and ensuring sustainable economic growth through deeper bilateral cooperation.
“We agreed that our shared interests must continue to be protected through cooperation that benefits both countries,” Prabowo said during a joint press statement.
The leaders also pledged to maintain open communication and resolve differences through dialogue, emphasizing mutual trust as the foundation of the bilateral relationship.
Economic cooperation remained the centerpiece of the summit. Indonesia confirmed that its sovereign investment agency, Danantara Indonesia, will lead the implementation of cross-border electricity trading initiatives with Singapore, supporting broader efforts to accelerate regional energy connectivity and the clean energy transition.
The two countries also agreed to expand collaboration in digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, food security, supply-chain resilience and defense, including the implementation of existing bilateral defense cooperation agreements.
Beyond economic and security ties, both leaders reaffirmed the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections through tourism, education and youth exchanges, describing these links as essential to sustaining long-term bilateral relations.
Singapore has consistently ranked among Indonesia’s largest sources of foreign direct investment, making the relationship one of the most significant economic partnerships in Southeast Asia. The latest agreements are expected to further strengthen investment flows while supporting regional industrial development and digital transformation.
The outcomes of this year’s Leaders’ Retreat signal a shared commitment by Indonesia and Singapore to build a more resilient and future-oriented strategic partnership, with cooperation spanning investment, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, digital innovation, defense and human capital development.
As ASEAN faces increasing geopolitical competition and economic fragmentation, both governments said stronger bilateral cooperation would contribute to regional stability, economic integration and sustainable growth across Southeast Asia. (Midwan)
