ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government through the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a Memorandum of Mutual Understanding (MSP) regarding Reducing Plastic Waste Leakage into the Sea in Indonesia.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) Global Conference which took place in Abu Dhabi 23 – 25 April 2024.
“The signing of the MSP is an important milestone in cooperation between Indonesia and the UAE regarding reducing plastic waste leaks into the sea. “This agreement represents a joint commitment to environmental management,” said Nani Hendiarti, Deputy for Environmental and Forestry Management, Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment in Indonesia in a statement in Jakarta, Wednesday, April 24 2024.
Representing the Indonesian Government, this signing was carried out by the Deputy for Environmental Management and Forestry, Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Nani Hendiarti together with his partners from the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment represented by the UAE Deputy Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mohammed Saeed Sultan Alnuami Mohammed Saeed Sultan Alnuami. The signing took place in Abu Dhabi, Tuesday, April 23 2024.
Nani said that Indonesia, with its extensive coastline and vast archipelago, is aware of the important challenges posed by plastic pollution, which is a transboundary problem.
He said that since implementing the national action to handle marine waste in 2018, his party had succeeded in reducing plastic waste leakage by 42 percent from the goal of achieving a reduction of 70 percent.
“We are improving infrastructure, leveraging technology, and driving behavioral change across society,” he said.
The signing of this MSP further confirms Indonesia’s commitment with global support in calling for a reduction in the leakage of plastic waste into the sea.
“A commitment to unite the business community, government and NGOs in calling for a 60 percent reduction in plastic production and the ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for future generations,” he said.
On that occasion, Nani extended an invitation to the UAE government to attend the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, which will take place from 18 to 25 May 2024.
Still in the series of World Water Forum activities, Nani said that currently the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mohamed Bin Zayed – Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Center (MBZ – Joko Widodo IMRC) is being prepared.
“This groundbreaking activity has been scheduled for May 19 2024. MBZ-Joko Widodo IMRC will mark another important moment in collaborative efforts regarding climate action,” said Nani. (ATN)
