ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia again exported 16 containers of fishery commodities worth US$831 thousand to a number of countries.

“This export is an indicator that Indonesian fisheries commodities are still a favorite in the international market,” said the Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono in the Nizam Zachman Ocean Fishery Port industrial area, North Jakarta, Saturday, October 12 2024.

Trenggono said that one of the main challenges in achieving Indonesia’s current fisheries export target is the slowdown in economic growth in the main export destination countries due to a decline in people’s purchasing power, such as the United States, Japan and the European Union. Therefore, Trenggono continues to encourage efforts to diversify the export market for fishery products to potential markets in order to encourage the achievement of the export target.

His party provides several facilitative supports to business actors by preparing the necessary equipment, starting from quality raw materials through Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), quality assurance systems along the supply chain, reliable logistics and distribution systems.

“This includes market access and adequate promotion to improve export performance in both main and potential markets,” explained Trenggono.

The commodities exported include Frozen Yellowfin Tuna, Frozen Skipjack, Frozen Squid, Frozen Milkfish, Frozen Barramundi and Snapper.

Minister Trengono said today’s delivery was the beginning of a total of 30 containers worth US$1,315 million which will be exported to China, the United States, Australia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Jordan until October 13.

For information, in the January-August 2024 period, the value of Indonesia’s exports to China was US$753.07 million or an increase of 9.6% compared to the same period the previous year. Likewise, exports of Indonesian fishery products to Vietnam, Australia and Jordan also experienced growth of 47.0%, 7.6% and 3.7% respectively.

“Of course today’s delivery will not be the last, because the total demand reached 30 containers. And I hope that in the future fishery exports will increase so that they have an impact on society, especially fishermen,” he added.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency for the period January-August 2024, the value of Indonesian fishery exports reached US$3.73 billion with a volume of 896 thousand tons. Indonesia’s main export commodities include Shrimp (27.8%), Tuna-Cakalang (17.5%), Squid-Cuttle-Octopus (14.1%), Crab-Crab (9.6%), Seaweed (6, 1%) and Tilapia (1.6%).

“2024 is the year of tuna and we are promoting tuna on several occasions. We are also conveying that Indonesian Seafood has various quality products and this has been proven through exports today,” said the Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Indonesian Marine and Fishery Products, Budi Sulistiyo.

According to Budi, skipjack tuna products are in great demand on the international market and are Indonesia’s main export commodity to the United States with a contribution of 12.3% of total fishery product exports to the United States. Meanwhile, the contribution of skipjack tuna exports in the January-August 2024 period in the Japanese market was 24.2%, Vietnam 18.0%, Australia 39.5%, the Philippines 50.7% and Jordan 97.7%.

“Of course this is a gift for the year of tuna considering that Indonesian skipjack tuna is a favorite on the international market,” concluded Budi. (AT Network)
