Indonesian Shrimp Exports to the U.S. Now Made Easier

Indonesian Shrimp product. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesian shrimp exporters have received a major boost as the United States government officially recognizes the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) as the Certifying Entity (CE) for shrimp exports from Indonesia to the U.S.

This recognition simplifies export procedures while ensuring product quality and safety. From now on, all Indonesian shrimp products bound for the U.S. must carry a Quality Certificate issued by KKP, reflecting America’s trust in Indonesia’s food safety and inspection systems.

“KKP has been designated by the U.S. government as the Certifying Entity for Indonesian shrimp exports. This means that shrimp shipments to the U.S.—particularly from Java and Lampung—must be accompanied by a Quality Certificate issued by KKP,” said Ishartini, Head of the Agency for the Quality Control and Inspection of Marine and Fisheries Products (Badan Mutu KKP), in Jakarta on Saturday, October 10, 2025.

The recognition follows the implementation of the U.S. FDA Import Alert 99-52, which adds an additional requirement for imported shrimp to be certified free from Cesium-137 contamination by a competent national authority recognized by the U.S.

“Import Alert 99-52 is not a red list or import ban,” Ishartini clarified. “It simply adds a new condition for shrimp exports from processing units in Java and Lampung to include a Cesium-137 Free Quality Certificate. Exports from other regions remain unaffected.”

As the sole certifying body authorized for Indonesian shrimp, KKP carries out stringent certification processes in collaboration with two key national agencies — the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Together, they ensure that shrimp exported to the U.S. meet international standards for food safety and radiation-free certification.

Milestone in Indonesia’s Marine and Fisheries Development

This U.S. recognition comes at a symbolic time, coinciding with the 26th anniversary of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the Marine and Fisheries Service Month 2025. The milestone underscores KKP’s ongoing commitment to developing a sustainable and globally competitive marine and fisheries sector.

Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has reiterated KKP’s role as Indonesia’s quality assurance authority, responsible for upholding international standards through inspections, surveillance, and official controls applied throughout every stage of the fisheries production chain.

With this recognition, Indonesian shrimp exports to the U.S. are expected to increase, supported by greater ease of access and international confidence in Indonesia’s quality assurance system. (AT Network)
