ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Vietnamese electric car manufacturer VinFast has expanded its business to the United States (US) and Europe over the past four years with plans to expand its business to 50 other markets.
Most recently, VinFast promised an investment of $1.2 billion in Indonesia, including building a new manufacturing plant with a projected annual capacity of 30,000 to 50,000 vehicles.
CEO of VinFast Indonesia, Tran Quoc Huy, said that the capital investment was carried out in stages, starting with the construction of a factory with an annual capacity of 50,000 electric vehicles.
“VinFast believes it has taken the right steps by entering the Indonesian electric vehicle market which is growing rapidly even though the global electric vehicle industry is currently haunted by rising interest rates and uncertain economic conditions,” he said, Friday, February 16 2024.
VinFast’s optimism for entering the Indonesian market is marked by the presence of electric vehicle models for various segments at the 2024 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) which will take place on 15-25 February 2024. The IIMS 2024 event is also a momentum for VinFast to introduce its first right-hand drive EV model at international market.
With the launch in the Indonesian market, VinFast is charting a new direction, venturing into developing markets after previously entering mature markets such as America and Europe.
VinFast realizes the important role of the Indonesian market in its expansion strategy. Moreover, Indonesia plays an important role in the world’s electric vehicle supply chain.
“Indonesia, which is rich in nickel, an important material for lithium-ion batteries found in VinFast electric vehicle batteries, has a natural advantage in the growing electric vehicle market,” he said.
Blueprint for the Future of Indonesia’s Electric Mobility
The Haiphong complex is the foundation for VinFast’s expansion into the Indonesian electric vehicle market, sparking hope and optimism for a greener future for the automotive industry.
On January 13, Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited the manufacturing complex in Haiphong and declared VinFast a fast-growing electric-based automotive company. When watching the production process, President Joko Widodo showed satisfaction and interest in the facilities and quality and design of VinFast products.
“In line with the government’s target to accelerate the domestic electric vehicle industry and increase market demand, President Joko Widodo’s support for VinFast adds to our confidence that a similar facility in Indonesia is an important step in achieving domestic electric vehicle ambitions,” said Tran Quoc Huy.
As proof of VinFast’s global aspirations, the Haiphong manufacturing complex boasts a level of automation unmatched in Southeast Asia, reaching 98%. This factory is a benchmark for the future of VinFast’s business to demonstrate its commitment to cutting-edge technology and operational efficiency.
The Haiphong manufacturing complex is more than just a production center that embodies VinFast’s vision as the future of electric vehicle manufacturing. By utilizing Industry 4.0 technology, VinFast wants to transform towards an interconnected intelligent machine ecosystem, providing real-time data-based manufacturing analysis results.
VinFast’s highly automated production at the Haiphong complex is driven by a strategic focus on real-time collaboration and research and development of cutting-edge electric vehicle technology. This special approach positions the complex as a springboard for the company’s continued global expansion and innovative spirit, thereby opening the next chapter in the electric vehicle revolution.
A Closer Look Inside the Haiphong Blueprint
At the Haiphong manufacturing complex, automotive production for all VinFast electric vehicles begins in the spacious Press Shop. Here, rolls of metal are fed into an automated line, cut, and pressed into precise shapes using state-of-the-art molds to form the frame of the VinFast vehicle.
With an area of 100,000 square meters, VinFast’s Body Shop operates 1,200 ABB robots to facilitate various tasks. This robot is deployed in real-time transportation, welding and monitoring processes using Industry 4.0 technology.
On average, one vehicle body requires more than 6,000 welding times. When operating at maximum capacity, this Body Shop can produce around 38 vehicle bodies per hour. These features and production figures make it the most modern and automated body factory in Southeast Asia.
After going through the Body Shop, the car body enters the Paint Shop which has a capacity of more than 800 cars per day in a relatively small area, namely 25,000 square meters. This extraordinary achievement can be realized through the application of several Industry 4.0 technologies that ensure efficiency and sustainable operations.
Furthermore, the largest area is given to the General Assemble (GA) Shop which shows the entire VinFast automotive manufacturing process. Designed by Eisenmann, a leading German supplier, the 200,000 square meter facility uses extensive automation with interconnected conveyors and driverless vehicles.
The car body will go through a conveyor line, where each necessary component will be equipped in stages, from carpets and seats to electronics and wheels. Here, we can witness an important step in integrating the motor and electric battery pack embedded into the lower chassis.
This process is the end of combining the upper body to create an electric vehicle that is ready to be driven. The key to an electric vehicle lies in the Battery Pack Shop, where automation and strict quality control ensure exceptional performance and safety.
Operating with cutting-edge technology, this Battery Pack Shop offers automation levels of up to 75% for maximum efficiency. The Manufacturing Execution System monitors every parameter, from gluing and fastening components to electrical current checking to guarantee a high level of precision and consistency.
“This finished battery pack uses advanced lithium-ion technology that powers all of VinFast’s electric vehicles to propel their products towards a more environmentally friendly future,” explains Tran Quoc Huy.
By adhering to strict international standards, VinFast always ensures the production of batteries that meet safety requirements.
“A world-class temperature control system combined with strict cleaning protocols and sophisticated monitoring improves the quality of the production environment to guarantee exceptional battery quality on every trip,” he said. (AT Network)
