ASIATODAY.ID, KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is taking a leading role in Southeast Asian diplomacy by facilitating ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia.
The high-level talks are taking place in Putrajaya on Monday, July 28, 2025, with hopes of de-escalating growing tensions along the border of the two neighboring countries.
Anwar stated that both governments had formally requested Malaysia’s assistance in mediating a peaceful resolution.
“I am currently discussing the parameters and terms, but the most important objective is to achieve an immediate ceasefire,” Anwar said.
Malaysia’s Diplomatic Role Gains Global Backing
Anwar further revealed that the initiative has drawn international attention, including encouragement from U.S. President Donald Trump, who urged the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis.
The negotiations will be led personally by Anwar and include representatives from both countries, with monitoring teams from Malaysia and possibly neighboring nations to ensure the process is conducted with transparency and accountability.
“I hope the talks will be successful. Our Foreign Ministry has been working around the clock to ensure that the parameters are clearly defined and mutually acceptable,” Anwar added.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in Southeast Asia, which he described as one of the most stable regions in the world with some of the fastest-growing economies.
Thailand and Cambodia Confirm Participation in Peace Talks
The Thai government, through its spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap, has confirmed its attendance at the regional peace consultation in Malaysia. The main objective of the talks is to consider proposals that could lead to concrete decisions and ultimately restore peace along the border.
“We hope the outcomes of the discussions in Malaysia will lead to a meaningful resolution and bring lasting peace between our two nations,” Jirayu stated.
Tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border have recently escalated, raising concerns about potential military clashes. While the conflict has not yet reached the scale seen in other regions, the need to halt armed confrontations remains urgent to prevent further damage. (BERNAMA)
