ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Operations Control Center, Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported, as of Tuesday, December 5 2023 at 22.28 WIB, the number of fatalities due to the eruption of Mount Marapi had increased to 15 people.
Ten of them have been identified by the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team, while the other 5 bodies are still in the process of being identified at the Dr. Regional General Hospital. Achmad Mochtar, Bukittinggi.
With the additional victims, the number of climbers who still cannot be evacuated is 8 people.
Until now, the search and rescue process is still being carried out by a joint team.
Mount Marapi is recorded as having experienced eruptions 46 times. The last eruption was recorded via seismograph on Tuesday, December 5 at 06.24 WIB with a maximum amplitude of 25.1 mm and a duration of 80 seconds. The volcano with a height of 2,891 meters above sea level is still at alert status or level II.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency for Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency together with a joint team continues to monitor the development of the eruption of Mount Marapi at the location in order to take quick action to help assist residents if greater volcanic activity occurs again.
People around Mount Marapi are asked not to carry out any activities at a distance of less than 3 km from the peak. Apart from that, people in 4 nearby sub-districts are advised to reduce activities outside the home. Apart from that, people should wear masks when doing outdoor activities.
