ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The beach at East Coast Park Sentosa Singapore was forced to close because it was contaminated by an oil spill caused by a ship incident at the Pasir Panjang Terminal. Beach closures at East Coast Park stretch from Area B to Area H.
“The closure is in place until further notice as we are currently in the process of cleaning up the Pier and Rocky Shore in the Labrador Nature Reserve which are also closed,” said the Maritime and Harbor Authority (MPA), National Parks Board (NParks), National Environment Agency (NEA), Sentosa Development Corporation in a joint statement on June 15 2024 as reported by the Strait Times.
On Sentosa, Tanjong, Palawan and Siloso beaches will remain open, but water activities and swimming are not permitted. Food and drink outlets, running tracks, fields and cycling paths will also remain open.
The oil spill was the result of an incident between the Dutch-flagged dredging vessel Vox Maxima and the Singapore-flagged bunker vessel Marine Honor which was stopped on June 14.
“Due to tidal currents, the oil landed along the coastline including at Sentosa, Labrador Nature Reserve, Southern Islands, Marina South Pier and East Coast Park,” the statement said.
There were no signs of an oil spill at Sisters’ Islands Marine Park, but oil sheens were visible in the surrounding waters. (ATN)
