ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – A deadly tragedy has struck the global peacekeeping mission.

Three Indonesian soldiers serving under the United Nations peacekeeping force have been killed, while others were injured in consecutive attacks in southern Lebanon. In response, Indonesia is strongly urging the UN Security Council to take immediate action and impose firm sanctions on Israel.

Indonesia’s House of Representatives (MPR) expressed deep condolences over the fallen troops, who were carrying out constitutional duties and international mandates under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani emphasized that the sacrifices of the soldiers must be honored through state recognition for both the victims and their families.

“This is part of our constitutional mandate to protect all Indonesians and the nation as a whole,” he stated quoted on April 1, 2026.

Amid the mourning, the MPR also voiced a firm stance, calling on the government to consider withdrawing Indonesian troops from the increasingly dangerous conflict zone.

Muzani noted that there are no sufficient guarantees of safety for peacekeepers as the situation in southern Lebanon continues to deteriorate.

Back-to-Back Attacks Signal Escalating

The Indonesian government strongly condemned a second attack that occurred on March 30, 2026, near Bani Haiyyan in southern Lebanon. The assault killed two additional personnel and injured two others, adding to the casualties from a previous incident.

These consecutive attacks are not seen as isolated events, but rather as a clear indication of worsening security conditions. Ongoing Israeli military operations in the area have significantly heightened the risks faced by UN peacekeepers.

Indonesia warned that the situation undermines the mandate of UNIFIL as stipulated in UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which was intended to maintain stability in the region.

Diplomatic Pressure: Call for Sanctions and Investigation

Indonesia reaffirmed that the safety of UN peacekeepers is non-negotiable. Any attack against them constitutes a serious violation of international law and must not go unpunished.
The government is calling for: An emergency session of the UN Security Council, A comprehensive, transparent, and independent investigation, Identification of those responsible and Firm sanctions against Israel.

Indonesia stressed that full accountability must be ensured for the attacks that claimed the lives of peacekeepers.

Grief and a Critical Turning Point

Indonesia extended its solidarity to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery for the injured personnel. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder that global peacekeeping missions are facing increasingly severe threats.

Beyond the immediate loss, the incident could mark a turning point in Indonesia’s role in international peacekeeping—balancing its long-standing global commitment with the urgent need to safeguard its personnel in increasingly volatile conflict zones. (AT Network)
