ASIATODAY.ID, SINGAPORE – Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto met with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2024, in Singapore, Saturday, June 1 2024.
The second meeting aims to increase defense cooperation and address pressing global issues.
“Warm greetings and appreciation to the President of Ukraine for the initiative of today’s meeting, especially to discuss defense issues,” said Prabowo.
In the midst of global and regional security challenges, both parties emphasized the importance of maintaining international peace and security amidst a number of conflicts and threats of terrorism. Both agreed on the need for peaceful dialogue and solutions through diplomatic efforts.
Humanitarian issues, especially the situation in Gaza, were also on the discussion agenda, with Indonesia and Ukraine both emphasizing the urgency of providing humanitarian assistance and ensuring access to affected populations in conflict zones.
Both parties also open opportunities to collaborate in the defense industry sector through technology transfer. This shows openness between Indonesia and Ukraine in expanding cooperation.
At the end of the meeting, Prabowo stated that he would strengthen Indonesia’s commitment to building strong and mutually beneficial defense relations with Ukraine.

Apart from Zelenski, Prabowo also held a bilateral meeting with United States (US) Minister of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III.
Prabowo’s meeting with the Pentagon Chief aims to strengthen the long-term partnership between the two countries and discuss issues of mutual interest.
At this meeting, Prabowo expressed his appreciation for US support in cooperation to modernize Indonesia’s defense equipment to meet the strength of the TNI.
Both countries also realize the importance of bilateral cooperation in defense modernization to develop capabilities to face various threats effectively.
“I express my appreciation for the support of the United States regarding cooperation in modernizing Indonesia’s defense equipment. “This is important to fulfill the basic strength of the TNI,” said Prabowo.

Prabowo also held a bilateral meeting with the Swedish Minister of Defense, H.E. Pal Henning Jonson.
The second meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere and reflected the strong and long-term partnership between Indonesia and Sweden, especially in the defense sector.
This bilateral meeting shows the continued seriousness of the two countries to strengthen constructive and mutually beneficial defense relations.
Defense cooperation talking points between the two countries include ongoing defense agreements, potential cooperation, and shared interests in promoting regional security and stability.
The two ministers affirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral defense ties and exploring opportunities for increased cooperation in the future.
Prabowo also highlighted Indonesia’s strategic position in the Southeast Asia region and emphasized the importance of strengthening defense relations with equal partners such as Sweden.
At the end of the conversation, Prabowo said that Indonesia looked forward to further collaboration with Sweden in advancing common goals to realize peace, security and prosperity in the region.

Then, Prabowo also had a bilateral meeting with the Dutch Minister of Defense, H.E. Kajsa Ollongren.
During the meeting, the two officials expressed their commitment to mutually strengthen and increase cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands, especially in efforts to achieve better defense in the future.
“Indonesia is committed to strengthening comprehensive strategic partnerships and harmonious relations, especially regarding defense cooperation with the Netherlands,” said Prabowo.
Then a number of other topics discussed at this bilateral meeting included the points of the memorandum of understanding signed between Indonesia and the Netherlands in 2014 which emphasized education and training programs that have provided benefits for TNI personnel for many years.
Apart from that, productive defense industrial cooperation between the two countries and maritime defense technology were also discussed. (AT Network)
