ASIATODAY.ID, MOROWALI – The nickel smelter fire incident in Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) occurred again.
This time, the smelter furnace belonging to PT Sulawesi Mining Investment (SMI) in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi caught fire on Friday evening, January 19 2024.
Morowali Resort Police Chief, AKBP Suprianto stated that there were no victims in this incident. However, 2 crane operators working near the fire location were exposed to smoke, causing them to have difficulty breathing.
“They have been treated medically and are in good condition,” he said Saturday, January 20 2024.
So far, the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
IMIP, as the manager of the industrial area, explained the incident.
According to Media Relations Head of PT IMIP Dedy Kurniawan, on Friday, January 19 2024 at around 19.40 WITA, furnace 1 in the smelter belonging to PT Sulawesi Mining Investment (SMI) overflowed and caused the slag liquid inside to overflow and spread to the ground floor. smelters.
“As a result, there was heat exposure to the electrical cable network in the area. To prevent a fire, the electricity supply at PT SMI’s smelter was then turned off. All employees working in the area were then evacuated,” explained Dedy Saturday, January 20 2024.
A total of four fire engines were deployed to carry out spraying to cool the slag liquid. After approximately 45 minutes, the slag liquid was finally cooled.
Dedy added that 2 employees were evacuated for observation and treatment. As a result of observations, no injuries were found.
After approximately two hours at the PT IMIP clinic installation, the two employees were allowed to return to their respective homes.
“The situation has now returned to normal. However, PT SMI is still stopping operation of furnace 1 for investigation and repair needs,” explained Dedy.
Previously, a smelter furnace fire also occurred in the IMIP area. A fire occurred at the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) factory on Sunday, December 24 2023. The incident resulted in the deaths of 21 workers. (ATN)
