ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Japanese company, Sumitomo Corporation and PT Kayan Hydro Energy (KHE) have ended cooperation in developing the Kayan Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA), in Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan.

Sumitomo had collaborated with PT KHE. They entered the Kayan Cascade hydropower project in 2022. However, not even two years have passed, the investment collaboration between KHE and Sumitomo ends in the first quarter of 2024.

However, Steven did not specify the reasons why the collaboration with Sumitomo ended. He only said that there were differences in perspective from a commercial perspective between Kayan Hydro Energy and Sumitomo. He also emphasized that with the end of the investment collaboration, his party no longer had any collaboration with Sumitomo.

Despite this, Steven revealed that Kayan Hydro Energy and Sumitomo still maintain a good relationship. His party also does not rule out the possibility of establishing productive cooperation with Sumitomo, both in the Kayan hydropower project and other projects in the future.

“There are differences in vision, especially from the commercial side. However, we still maintain good relations with Sumitomo,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Arsari Group, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said that he would take part in the construction of the Kayan Cascade hydropower project, which is a 9000 MW hydroelectric power plant, making it the largest hydroelectric power plant in Southeast Asia. This project, which was built on the Kayan River, North Kalimantan, consists of 5 cascades, where apart from producing electricity, this hydropower plant will also be produced. provides many benefits for the environment and surrounding areas, such as agriculture, plantations, forestry, irrigation and tourism.

“From the past, I have always supported projects that are very beneficial for national development. So all projects that will provide great benefits must be supported,” explained Hashim.

Hashim further said that currently his party has a similar project in East Kalimantan.

“The project is the same. It is a renewable energy project. The point is that when it comes to New Renewable Energy I am always interested,” he said.

He added that the owner of PT Kayan Hydro Energy, Tjandra Limanjaya, is an old friend of his. In fact, he has been friends with Tjandra Limanjaya for 10 years.

“In fact, Mr. Tjandra has been friends with my brother for 30 years,” he said.

Meanwhile, KHE is targeting the Kayan Cascade hydropower project to be completed in 2035. Later, the hydropower will be prioritized to support the need for electrical energy sources in industrial areas and a number of other national strategic projects.

The Kayan hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 9,000 megawatts (MW) is claimed to be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Southeast Asia. The total investment value reached US$17.8 billion.

If detailed, the first stage of the Kayan Hydroelectric Power Plant has a capacity of 900 MW, the second stage is 1,200 MW, the third and fourth stages are 1,800 MW each, and the fifth stage is 3,300 MW. Kayan PLTA will later distribute electricity to the Indonesian green industrial area (KIHI) in North Kalimantan, which is also managed by PT Kalimantan Industrial Park Indonesia (KIPI) and PT Indonesia Strategis Industry (ISI). Apart from that, the Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant is also planned to meet electricity needs in the National Capital City (IKN) of the archipelago. (AT Network)
