ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The Government of Indonesia, under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, is set to launch the construction of the Giant Sea Wall, a massive coastal defense project along the northern coast of Java. This national strategic project, valued at USD 80 billion, is expected to serve as a long-term solution to coastal flooding (rob) and extreme climate change impacts.
Delivering his keynote speech at the 2025 International Infrastructure Conference at the Jakarta Convention Center on Thursday, June 12, President Prabowo emphasized the urgency and national importance of this mega infrastructure initiative.
“Let me underline that one of the most vital and strategic infrastructure projects for our future is the construction of the Giant Sea Wall along the northern coast of Java,” President Prabowo stated.
President Prabowo revealed that the idea for this sea wall has been in the pipeline since 1995. The ambitious structure is designed to stretch 500 kilometers, from Banten to Gresik in East Java.
With an estimated total cost of USD 80 billion, the construction will be carried out in stages. The initial phase will focus on the Jakarta Bay area, expected to take 8 to 10 years with a budget of around USD 8–10 billion.
“Extending it to East Java may take 15 to 20 years. That’s not a problem. As an old proverb says, a journey of 1,000 kilometers begins with a single step. We will begin that step now,” he affirmed.
President Prabowo stressed the importance of collaboration between the central government and the Jakarta provincial administration to finance the first stage of the project.
“If we need USD 8 billion for eight years, that’s USD 1 billion per year. Jakarta contributes half, the central government the other half. I’ve met with the Jakarta Governor and sent envoys. We will share the burden,” he explained.
To oversee the project, President Prabowo also announced plans to establish a North Java Sea Wall Authority, a dedicated agency to ensure the smooth implementation and governance of this national endeavor.
While expressing openness to international cooperation, President Prabowo made it clear that Indonesia will not wait for foreign investors to move forward.
“Companies from China, Japan, Korea, Europe, and the Middle East are welcome to participate. But we will not wait — we will begin using our own national capacity,” he concluded. (AT Network)
