ASIATODAY.ID, LONDON – The Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia has agreed to establish cooperation in the field of maritime transportation with Saudi Arabia, Brunei Darussalam and the non-profit organization International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA).
The cooperation agreement was expressed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the sidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly Session in London, England, Tuesday, November 28 2023 local time.
“Through this collaboration, it is hoped that we can improve safety aspects and national shipping services,” said Indonesian Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi in his statement, Thursday, November 30 2023.
In detail, Minister Budi explained that the cooperation with Saudi Arabia was the signing of the MoU on the Recognition of Standard Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer (STCW) Certificates, by the Director General of Sea Transportation, Capt. Antoni Arif Priadi with Acting President Public Transport Authority Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Rumaih Al-Rumaih.
This collaboration aims to realize mutual recognition between the two countries regarding maritime education and training, and seafaring expertise certificates, health certificates for working on ships, in accordance with international standards.
“We want to ensure that Indonesian seafarers receive the highest quality training that complies with international standards and contributes to the continued safety of our seas,” he said.
Meanwhile, with IALA, an MoU on maritime cooperation was signed by the Director General of Sea Transportation, Capt. Antoni Arif Priadi with IALA Secretary General Francis Zachariae.
The scope of the collaboration is to maintain the reliability of shipping safety equipment and improve the quality of shipping human resources in accordance with international standards.
IALA as an international institution has made a significant contribution globally in establishing regulations, especially for navigation assistance and ship traffic services. In accordance with its duties, IALA will provide and operate Shipping Navigation Aids (SBNP), Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), Coastal Radio Stations (SROP) in Indonesian waters, as well as developing the e-Navigation concept.
Through this collaboration, it is hoped that it can improve the safety and efficiency of navigation as well as maritime protection in Indonesian waters.
Furthermore, with Brunei Darussalam, an MoU was signed on Concerning Cooperation in the Field of Merchant Shipping and Port Operations by the Director General of Sea Transportation, Capt. Antoni Arif Priadi with Interim Chief Executive of Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam Haji Mohd Salihin Haji Aspar.
This collaboration aims to facilitate and improve cooperation in the fields of commercial shipping and port operations.
“It is hoped that this collaboration will provide opportunities to open sea connectivity which will lead to economic growth and trade between countries, as well as relations between the people of the two countries,” explained Budi. (AT Network)
