ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – PT Pertamina is collaborating with Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) for the development of Rig-to-CCS.

Rig-to-CCS is a technology development initiative to utilize offshore oil and gas platforms that are no longer used as carbon capture facilities (CCS).

Cooperation on Rig-to-CCS development was carried out through the signing of a Joint Study Agreement by Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati and President & CEO of Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC), Dong Sub Kim in Seoul, South Korea, Wednesday, January 10 2024).

Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati said that the Rig-to-CCS development collaboration was Pertamina’s commitment to reduce emissions and support the government’s target of achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060 or sooner.

“I really appreciate this collaboration. In addition to enriching carbon capture & storage (CCS) studies, this collaboration also helps solve Indonesia’s problems with abandonment and site restoration (ASR) of offshore platforms,” said Nicke.

According to Nicke, ASR is a challenge in itself due to the large number of offshore oil and gas platforms that are no longer used after oil and gas production ended, after decades of use.

“The cost of conventional ASR or decommissioning is very expensive, so alternative ASR solutions are needed, especially reuse, so that the implementation of ASR for offshore platforms can be carried out gradually and efficiently,” said Nicke.

Meanwhile, Pertamina Senior Vice President Research and Technology Innovation Oki Muraza added, apart from Rig-to-CCS, collaboration with KNOC could also develop into technology development in other low-carbon businesses.

“Cooperation can be expanded to develop Rig-to-Wind Farm, Rig-to-Fish-Farm, and also Rig-to-LNG-Terminal, to bring natural gas to locations where energy facilities are not yet accessible,” he said. (AT Network)
