ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi said Indonesia had decided to actively participate in helping provide legal input to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the legal consequences of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.
Retno explained that the United Nations General Assembly (UN) had requested an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the ICJ had invited UN member states to provide input.
“This request was submitted by the UN General Assembly to the ICJ on January 17 2023. Regarding this request, the ICJ has invited UN member countries to provide input on legal views responding to this request,” said Retno in a Keynote Speech, at her office, Tuesday, January 16 2024 .
He said that Indonesia had provided legal opinion input to the ICJ, and the input consisted of two things.
“First, a written statement that Indonesia has submitted to the ICJ in July 2023. Second, an oral statement will be delivered by the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs on February 19 2024 at the ICJ,” he said.
Furthermore, he said that even though it was not yet a party to the Genocide Convention, Indonesia had provided support to South Africa to complain about Israel’s violations of the crime of genocide to the ICJ.
“The essence of everything Indonesia does is to look for all possible ways to continue providing support for the struggle of the Palestinian people,” he said.
According to him, various Israeli policies such as the annexation of Palestinian territories, settlements in the West Bank, and changing the status of the City of Jerusalem that have been carried out are certainly not legal according to international law.
Retno emphasized that these illegal actions by Israel must be stopped, and accountability is needed for the legal violations that occurred.
Minister Retno also emphasized that countries must provide support to Palestine, and the international community, including the UN must also not recognize the legality of Israel’s actions. (AT Network)
