ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The United States (US) plan to relocate factories from China was welcomed positively by the Batam Free Trade Zone and Free Port Management Agency (BP Batam).
BP Batam also invited US investors to choose Batam Island as a place to build semiconductor industrial factories.
Head of BP Batam, Irfan Syakir Widyasa, explained that the government is very serious about developing Batam. One of them is by establishing Batam as a free trade and special economic area.
In Presidential Regulation Number 1/2024, he explained, a master plan for the development of Batam, Bintang and Karimun is regulated, so that the three islands which are close to each other do not compete with each other, their respective economic specializations are regulated.
“For Batam, in the future it will be more specialized in light industry but with high added value. For example semiconductors, data centers, the animation industry,” explained Irfan, quoted on Sunday, February 25 2024.
Specifically for the development of the semiconductor industry, Irfan explained that the opportunity to attract foreign investment is very large, one of which is US investors who are looking for places to build semiconductor industrial factories outside China.
He claimed that currently Batam is one of the locations that the US is looking at.
“Even the US parliament has budgeted $50 billion per year to find out which countries. There are six countries being monitored, one of which is Batam, Indonesia,” he said.
As a reference, the realization of foreign investment in 2023 in Batam reached $295.9 million, originating from 3,551 projects.
The five countries that have invested the most in Batam are Singapore ($366.5 million), China ($51.8 million), Hong Kong ($41.7 million), France ($40.8 million), and Japan ($22.7 million ). (ATN)
