ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The UN Secretariat on March 14 2022 announced the formation of the Global Crisis Response Group (GCRG) on Food, Energy and Finance.
To ensure global political leadership and coordination, UN Secretary General António Guterres chairs the Champions Group of Heads of State or Government.
This agency works to fight for and facilitate global consensus in responding to the impact of crises in the food, energy and financial sectors, especially in countries vulnerable to crises.
In particular, Indonesia is one of the countries trusted to assist mitigation efforts and solutions to the world financial crisis in the GCRG. The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo is also believed to be a member of the Champions Group of the GCRG along with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Prime Minister of Barbados, Prime Minister of Denmark, Chancellor of Germany and President of Senegal.
“During the G20 Presidency, Indonesia confirmed the commitment of G20 members to double global efforts to overcome food insecurity. At the regional level, as Chair of ASEAN this year, and the largest economy in the ASEAN region, with growth that is among the fastest in the world, Indonesia encourages further international assistance, focusing on vulnerable developing countries, and welcomes the involvement of all stakeholders, ” said the Coordinating Minister for the Indonesian Economy, Airlangga Hartarto when representing President Joko Widodo at the third Head of State or Head of Government Level Meeting of the Champions Group of the GCRG at the end of July 2023.
Participation in the GCRG also increasingly marks Indonesia’s important role in efforts to resolve various global issues, because apart from being trusted to focus on financial solutions, Indonesia also remains open to providing input regarding the food and energy crisis.
During its development, GCRG membership was later expanded to 9 Heads of State and Government including pro tempore chairs from the G7 (Japan), G20 (India), and the African Union (Comoros).
For Indonesia’s important role, dedication and participation in developing solutions to global problems as one of the Champions of the GCRG throughout 2022-2023, UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed his gratitude to President Joko Widodo.
In this statement, UN Secretary General Antonio also explained that under the leadership of the Champions, the UN was able to highlight and provide policy recommendations to overcome the impact of the global crisis affecting developing countries.
“The formation of the GCRG has been seen as capable of becoming a model for handling the global crisis. “The direct involvement of leaders from a small group of key countries in efforts to encourage solutions, mobilize resources and provide support ensures that the GCRG can run effectively,” said Airlangga.
In its development, GCRG has been able to publish 4 policy recommendations in the form of brief notes for decision makers regarding the global impact of the war in Ukraine.
The topics raised in the four briefs are the crisis in the food, energy and financial systems, the cost of living crisis, the energy crisis and global public debt. (AT Network)
