ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia is still far behind ASEAN in the Smart City Index (SCI) ranking.
Based on the SCI survey conducted by the Institute of Management and Development (IMD), three big cities in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Medan, and Makassar, are still below cities in ASEAN countries such as Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Bangkok (Thailand), and Hanoi ( Vietnamese).
Of 142 world cities, Jakarta is ranked 103rd, down 1 place compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Medan did not move from 112th place, and Makassar fell 1 place to 115th.
President of the Smart City Observatory IMD World Competitiveness Center, Bruno Lanvin, said that a number of factors, such as air pollution, traffic congestion and security, have an important role in determining the ranking of Indonesian cities in the world ranking.
Based on the survey, Jakarta residents identified 3 main problems that needed to be addressed immediately by local government, including, air pollution (68.4%), traffic congestion (66%), and corruption (51.7%).
On the other hand, respondents expressed satisfaction with the ease of accessing schedules and purchasing public transport tickets online (score 83.2), scheduling health services online (score 81.1), and accessing online job search portals (score 81).
In Medan, the 3 main problems that received attention were security (58.3%), unemployment (53.2%), and corruption (52.7%). However, respondents stated that they were satisfied with the business world which created many jobs (score 78.3), easy access to schedules and purchasing public transport tickets online (score 77.8), and online job search (score 77).
Meanwhile, Makassar respondents highlighted 3 main problems, namely, traffic jams (52.6%), unemployment (52.5%), and corruption (49.6%). On the positive side, respondents expressed satisfaction with the ease of scheduling health services online (score 74), accessing job opportunities online (score 73.9), and accessing schedules and purchasing public transport tickets online (score 72.1).
“SCI data is relevant to assist efforts to design a new capital city in the archipelago. Because, the results of this research provide guidelines and an overview of how innovation and development of future cities will be,” he said, quoted from an official statement, Tuesday, April 23 2024.
It should be noted that smart cities are designed to have advanced technology, contribute to the quality of life of the people who live in them, encourage environmental sustainability, and open up opportunities and equality for their residents.
Therefore, cities need to ensure that marginalized groups such as people with disabilities, the elderly, minority groups, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, startups receive adequate support. (ATN)
