ASIATODAY.ID, BRUSSELS – Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi, urged European countries to encourage the implementation of a two-state solution to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Retno made this call at a meeting between several member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) with several member countries of the European Union (EU) and several other European countries in Brussels, Belgium, 26 May 2024.
“This meeting is very important in the midst of the increasingly deteriorating situation in Palestine and Israel’s increasing disregard for the decisions of the International Court of Justice. “I used this meeting to make appeals to European countries so that the two-state solution can be implemented,” said Retno in a press statement quoted on Tuesday, May 28 2024.
During the meeting, Minister Retno made three appeals.
First, an immediate and permanent ceasefire must be pushed forward. All parties must strive for Israel to comply with the decision of the International Court of Justice and stop military action in Rafah so that the delivery of humanitarian aid can be carried out.
“In this regard, I emphasize that the role of the UN Security Council is very important. “I convey this deliberately considering that several countries present at the meeting are members of the UN Security Council, such as the UK, Algeria, UAE and Slovenia,” said Retno.
Second, continue to provide support to UNRWA because UNRWA’s role is very important to prevent the humanitarian situation from getting worse.
Third, the importance of recognizing Palestine and supporting Palestinian membership in the UN. All countries need to use their respective influences so that the veto regarding Palestinian membership in the UN does not occur again in the UN Security Council. Palestine’s membership in the UN will help Palestine in building its country.
Apart from these three things, Retno also emphasized the importance of Palestinian unity and supported the reforms carried out by the Palestinian government because this would contribute to realizing a two-state solution.
“This meeting is very important to encourage the implementation of the two-state solution and emphasize that the two-state solution is the only right option,” he stressed.
As is known, recently Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said that the two-state solution no longer exists.
In an open discussion during the meeting, Retno noted several things that needed to be underlined.
First, everyone present was committed to realizing a two-state solution as the only way to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Second, the OIC countries expressed their appreciation to Norway, Spain and Ireland for their decision to recognize Palestine. The OIC encourages other European countries to recognize the state of Palestine.
Third, everyone agrees on the importance of empowering the Palestinian Authority and supporting the reforms carried out by the Palestinian Authority.
Fourth, everyone agrees to continue to strive for the smooth running of humanitarian assistance.
From the OIC side, the meeting was attended by the Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Algeria, Turkiye, Bahrain and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from the UAE. Most of these countries are members of the OIC Contact Group. The new Palestinian Prime Minister was also present at the Meeting.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Retno held a bilateral meeting with the High Representative/Vice President of the European Commission, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, and the Prime Minister of Palestine to discuss the issue of Palestine and cooperation. bilateral.
