Morowali Nickel Smelter Accident, Government Will Evaluate Tsingshan Group and IMIP

Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government will soon evaluate PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) and Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP). This step was taken after a work accident at the nickel smelter owned by PT ITSS in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi occurred again.

Previously, five months ago an explosion occurred at the smelter.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that his party had asked for clarification from PT IMIP, but they could not attend because they were conducting an investigation.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry will also coordinate with the management of PT ITSS and PT IMIP to ensure compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations. This step was taken to enforce appropriate standards in the smelter industry which has a high risk.

“If necessary, our team will carry out inspections at the location,” said Agus in a written statement quoted on Saturday, June 15 2024.

Agus also emphasized the importance of maintaining work safety. According to him, work safety culture must be an inseparable part of every individual and company.

“We invite all relevant parties to make occupational safety and health a top priority in industrial activities, as a concrete step to reduce the number of work accidents in the future,” he said.

Furthermore, Agus recommended that companies carry out a number of essential improvements to improve operational safety, including preparing a risk map in the furnace area with appropriate mitigation measures.

He also requested that the company ensure that the implementation of repairs is in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP) which has a tiered responsibility structure, as well as carry out regular calibration of temperature and electric current measuring instruments. (ATN)
