ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian State Electricity Company, PT PLN (Persero) is ready to meet electricity needs for the industrial sector in Indonesia through the Green Energy as a Service (GEAS) service.
GEAS services are a commitment to providing clean electricity from new and renewable energy-based power plants for industry.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized that PLN continues to be committed to responding to changes in world industry that are leading to zero emissions. This step is in line with the government’s efforts to meet the zero carbon emissions (NZE) target by 2060.
“In line with the high commitment of the industrial sector to support decarbonization in Indonesia, PLN provides green electricity through renewable energy certificates (REC) as an internationally recognized GEAS product. Each REC certificate proves that the electricity per megawatt hour (MWh) used comes from energy plants renewable or non-fossil,” said Darmawan, in a statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 17 2024.
To ensure that green electricity is met, PLN continues to increase renewable energy generation capacity in the country. Until 2023, PLN’s renewable energy generation development has reached 8,786 megawatts (MW). In detail, hydro-based generation is 5,777 MW, geothermal-based generation is 2,519 MW, and the rest comes from solar, wind and biomass.
PLN together with the government are also finalizing the increase in the renewable energy mix in the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) and the latest Electric Power Addition Business Plan (RUPTL). The target is that the increase in generating capacity in Indonesia in the future will be supported by renewable energy.
“From today until 2040, additional capacity of 21 gigawatts (GW) will come from gas-fired power plants, 28 GW from solar and wind power, 31 GW from hydro and geothermal power, 2.4 GW from new energy,” said Darmawan.
Meanwhile, Head of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) Secretariat Paul Butarbutar said that JETP together with other global partners fully supports the development of the renewable energy ecosystem in Indonesia.
In this case, JETP together with the International Partners Group (IPG) are ready to support funding for green projects developed by PLN.
“This is a list of priority projects that we have discussed with our colleagues from IPG and also from PLN. So, we are happy if colleagues from industry, from associations or developers want their projects to be funded,” said Paul.
Likewise, Director of the Southeast Asia Energy Division at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Andrew Jeffries said PLN’s various efforts to increase the use of renewable energy were in line with the global energy transition agenda.
He hopes that PLN will not only be able to supply clean electricity for industry, but also improve the economy.
“We have a long history of collaborating with and supporting PLN in the energy sector. We are committed to helping Indonesia and other developing countries to achieve economic growth, eradicate poverty and improve the welfare of all Indonesian people,” said Andrew. (AT Network)
