ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia and Canada have agreed to establish bilateral cooperation in the field of intellectual property. This collaboration was formalized in a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 65th General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, Monday, July 15 2024.

The Director General of Intellectual Property at the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Min Usihen, views that collaboration with intellectual property offices from developed countries such as Canada is very important to increase Indonesia’s capacity in developing an intellectual property system.

“This kind of cooperation is very important for Indonesia in strengthening infrastructure and intellectual property enforcement mechanisms,” said Min on this occasion, as quoted from an official statement in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 17 2024.

Min Usihen wants to get further technical support and share expertise with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) to help develop Indonesia’s intellectual property ecosystem, including efforts to create, protect and effectively utilize intellectual property.

He hopes that with guidance from CIPO, the Indonesian Intellectual Property Academy can reach international standards and provide significant benefits to stakeholders throughout the country.

He explained that Indonesia had established the Indonesian Intellectual Property Academy with the assistance of WIPO, which aims to build capacity and provide comprehensive intellectual property education programs.

The academy was established to overcome various challenges to Indonesia’s intellectual property progress, such as the increasing number of intellectual property applications and workload for examiners as well as the need to increase law enforcement in dealing with new forms of intellectual property violations in the digital era.

Apart from strengthening bilateral cooperation, the bilateral meeting was also held to share best practices between the intellectual property offices of the two countries.

In this discussion, Indonesia’s significant progress in developing intellectual property over the last decade was highlighted, such as the main legislative milestones for Indonesian intellectual property, namely the enactment of the 2014 Copyright Law, the 2016 Patent Law, and the Trademark and Geographical Indications Law. in 2016.

Not only that, Min continued, Indonesia’s accession to several international agreements such as the Madrid Protocol, the Marrakesh Agreement, the Beijing Agreement, the Nice Agreement and the Budapest Agreement were also included in the main legislative milestones.

In addition, Indonesia has implemented national regulations on communal intellectual property, especially regarding genetic resources, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions.

According to him, technological advances, especially in artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and blockchain have driven the progress of intellectual property.

“However, this development also presents new challenges that require international cooperation to be overcome effectively,” he said. (AT Network)
