ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Human trafficking cases have been revealed again in Indonesia.

Most recently, the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia National Police uncovered a case of trafficking in 50 Indonesian women who were sent to Australia to become commercial sex workers.

Director of General Crimes at the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Indonesian National Police, Brigadier General Djuhandhani Rahardjo Puro, said that in this human trafficking case, his party had named two suspects, namely FLA and SS alias Batman. Both of them have made a profit of IDR 500 million.

“The number of Indonesian citizens who were recruited and sent as commercial sex workers in Australia is approximately 50 people and the suspect in this case has made a profit of IDR 500 million,” he explained, Tuesday, July 23 2024.

He explained that the FLA acted as a recruiter for victims to be sent to Sydney. After being sent, the victim was then accommodated by the SS as a pimp to work in a place of prostitution. Both have also been arrested. FLA was arrested by Bareskrim and SS by the Australian police.

The method was that the suspect had sent the victim to Sydney, Australia through a non-procedural process. For example, the suspect had prepared fake documents for visa processing.

Police investigators have also discovered a work agreement between the victim and the suspect as a commercial sex worker before leaving for Australia. The agreement contains matters regarding victims’ rights such as insurance, salary, and type of work.

“The agreement includes rental fees, a week’s residence of AU$100, the first month’s salary is withheld until the contract is completed, work is a minimum of 20 days per month,” added Djuhandhani.

Meanwhile, if the victim has signed a letter of agreement regarding a debt receivable of IDR 50 million as a guarantee if the victim terminates the contract, later the victim will have to pay the debt if it does not comply with the agreement.

For their actions, the suspects were threatened with Article 4 of Law no. 21/2007 concerning the Eradication of the Crime of Human Trafficking with a maximum penalty of 15 years and a fine of IDR 600 million. (ATN)
