Indonesia and China Hold First Dialogue, Strengthen Defense and Security Cooperation

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia and China held a Joint Dialogue at the Level of Senior Officials of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of the two countries (SOM 2+2) on Tuesday, August 13 2024.

This dialogue was led by the Director General of Asia Pacific and Africa of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdul Kadir Jailani, together with the Secretary of the Directorate General of Defense Strategy of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Oktaheroe Ramsi.

“This meeting opened a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China, where for the first time a joint dialogue was held to discuss strengthening cooperation in the fields of politics, defense and security,” said Jailani.

The SOM 2+2 Joint Dialogue will be a preparation event for a similar Dialogue at the Ministerial level which is expected to be held for the first time in 2025.

In this meeting held in Jakarta, the Chinese delegation was led by China’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sun Weidong and Deputy Head of the Office of International Military Cooperation, China’s Central Military Commission, Major General Zhang Baoqun.

The meeting succeeded in agreeing on capacity development cooperation for diplomats and joint training between the armed forces of the two countries. In addition, the two countries are committed to strengthening cooperation in maintaining security and stability in the region, preventing criminal acts of terrorism, and dealing with transnational crimes.

The implementation of the Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue MoU which was agreed upon during President Joko Widodo’s visit to Beijing, October 2023.

The plan is that holding the 2+2 Joint Dialogue at the Ministerial level in 2025 will be part of a series of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-China diplomatic relations that have been established since April 13 1950. (AT Network)
