Beware of the Dirty Nickel Indonesia Campaign by Western Countries

PT Ceria Nugraha Indotama (Ceria Group) nickel ore mining activities in the Lapaopao Block, Wolo District, Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. PT Ceria is committed to implementing Good Mining Practice in every mining activity. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government has detected a systematic attack launched by western countries to downgrade Indonesian nickel.

Director General of Minerals and Coal, Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tri Winarno, revealed that mining companies should be aware of this. Therefore, he reminded mining companies to operate in accordance with applicable regulations, including those related to post-mining.

Tri Winarno said Australia was campaigning for dirty nickel because mining companies in that country were suspected of being unable to compete with Indonesia. Because the price of Indonesian nickel is much cheaper.

“Australia has indeed complained about our nickel because because of Indonesian nickel the price of nickel immediately dropped, even though our case costs are relatively small compared to other countries,” said Tri Winarno after attending a national mining seminar held by the Yogyakarta UPN Veteran Mining Alumni Association, in Jakarta, Tuesday, September 24 2024.

According to him, the campaign launched by Australia needs to be anticipated by mining companies with good environmental management. Mining companies must implement good mining practices and so on. This is what will make Indonesian nickel still able to compete with other countries.

“We are trying to ensure that dirty nickel does not become a reality. We have to face it together. But we are also committed to carrying out mining that pays attention to environmental aspects,” he stressed.

However, Tri Winarno did not ask mining companies to exceed their obligations. Most importantly, mining companies must comply with and implement applicable regulations.

Through this seminar, Tri Winarno hopes to provide contributions and input to the government of Indonesia’s elected president and vice president, Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, especially regarding good mineral and coal management.

“So that there will be input on better management of minerals and coal,” he added. (AT Network)
