According to Prabowo, this step will expand Indonesia’s partnership globally and also make Indonesia not only part of a certain bloc.
Prabowo said that neighboring countries with large economies are in BRICS. Therefore, he said, Indonesia also needs to be present in the organization.
This is done so that Indonesia is everywhere and does not lean towards a certain bloc.
“We see BRICS as large economies, India, Brazil, China, South Africa, are already there and many of our neighboring countries have already gone there. Thailand, Malaysia have expressed interest, UAE, Egypt,” said Prabowo in a written statement, Monday, October 28, 2024.
BRICS has announced 13 countries that have officially become their partners. BRICS is an economic bloc whose members are developing countries. Four of the 13 BRICS partner countries are from Southeast Asia, one of which is Indonesia. In addition, there are also Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.

BRICS is an international organization that initially consisted of 5 countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Then four other members were added, namely the UAE, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia.
Thus, the total number of BRICS members is now 9 countries. Meanwhile, Indonesia and 12 other countries are still partners.
Indonesia is very interested in joining BRICS. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said that becoming a member of this organization will have a positive impact on Indonesia.
“Indonesia’s joining BRICS is an embodiment of an active free foreign policy. It does not mean that we join a certain camp, but we actively participate in all forums,” said Sugiono while attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, on Thursday, October 24, quoted from the MOFA release.
According to Sugiono, BRICS will prioritize the right to development for developing countries, and support the reform of the multilateral system and become a unifying force for the Global South.
“In BRICS, I also emphasize the importance of solidarity and commitment to immediately implement a ceasefire and enforce international law for global peace, especially in Palestine,” he explained.
Reported from the official website of the Council on Foreign Relations, BRICS functions to coordinate and facilitate economic cooperation between developing countries. This aims to increase their economic productivity so that they are on par with developed countries.
Because, currently, global economic power is dominated by developed countries from Europe, America, and some from Asia.
