ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Two nickel mining companies in North Morowali, Central Sulawesi had to receive sanctions because they were found to have used marine space illegally.
These findings are based on the results of a Marine Intelligence-based investigation carried out by a team from the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries through the Special Police for Management of Coastal Areas and Small Islands, the Bitung Marine and Fisheries Resources Management Base.
According to the Director General of Marine Resources and Fisheries Supervision, Pung Nugroho Saksono, indications of violations of marine space utilization are that there are jetty construction activities covering an area of 2.26660 hectares belonging to CV RU and 0.96859 hectares belonging to CV SAP which are not accompanied by Approval documents for Conformity of Space Utilization Activities Sea and Business Licensing.
“We are carrying out government coercion in the form of sealing the business location for the construction of a special terminal in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi,” stressed Pung Nugroho, in Jakarta, Thursday, November 14 2024.
Ipunk explained that sealing the use of marine space without permits is one of the law enforcement efforts related to one of the blue economy priority programs of the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in order to protect marine ecology.
“We stopped the reclamation activities to stop violations and force the company to fulfill its obligations,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Director of Marine Resources Supervision, Sumono Darwinto encouraged CV RU and CV SAP to immediately fulfill the basic requirements for Approval of Conformity for Marine Space Utilization Activities which can be submitted via online single submission (OSS) in coordination with the Central Sulawesi Provincial Maritime and Fisheries Service and BPSPL Makassar.
“The government has mapped the level of business risk according to business fields in Government Regulation 5/2021 concerning the Implementation of Risk-Based Business Licensing. “In these regulations, reclamation is included in the category of high-risk business activities,” he said.
Head of the Bitung Marine and Fisheries Resources Management Base, Kurniawan, said that previously his party had received reports indicating violations related to reclamation activities for CV RU and CV SAP.
His party then deployed Special Police to collect information in the field in early November 2024.
According to the statement made by CV RU and CV SAP, the area was reclaimed to build a special jetty terminal to support the mining business for nickel production operations, but does not yet have Approval for Suitability of Marine Space Utilization Activities. (AT Network)
