ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are further strengthening synergy in an effort to encourage sustainable industrial development in Indonesia.
The collaboration between the two parties, for example, will be realized in the form of green industry development and downstreaming of critical minerals such as nickel.
“We welcome UNIDO’s initiative in strengthening the standardization of environmentally-based industrial areas. This is in line with the policy of the Ministry of Industry which is currently drafting regulations related to environmentally-aware industrial areas,” said the Director General of Resilience, Regionalization, and International Industrial Access, Tri Supondy in his official statement in Jakarta, Monday, March 10, 2025.
On Wednesday, March 5, the Ministry of Industry received a visit from UNIDO in Jakarta. The Director General of Resilience, Regionalization, and International Industrial Access emphasized that UNIDO has a strategic role in supporting the acceleration of national industrial transformation. Several opportunities for cooperation were discussed at the meeting.
“UNIDO expressed its interest in developing a workforce capacity building program in the industrial sector, in collaboration with universities in China and Europe. In addition, UNIDO also proposed collaboration in the management and recycling of lithium batteries from the electric vehicle industry,” said Tri.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry, Setia Diarta highlighted the importance of strengthening the nickel industry supply chain in Indonesia.
“We want to ensure that nickel downstreaming does not stop at raw material production, but also includes the development of battery recycling technology. That way, the national electric vehicle industry can be more independent and competitive in the global market,” he explained.
UNIDO Managing Director, Ciyong Zou, appreciated Indonesia’s steps in developing a green industrial ecosystem and mineral downstreaming.
“Indonesia has great potential in the manufacturing industry and mineral resources. UNIDO is ready to support the strengthening of sustainable industrial infrastructure, including through technology transfer and technical assistance,” said Zou.
In addition to discussing cooperation opportunities, the Ministry of Industry and UNIDO also evaluated the implementation of the Indonesia-UNIDO Country Programme (IUCP) 2021-2025. This program has included various strategic initiatives, such as the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme (GEIPP) which is now entering an advanced stage involving five industrial areas in Indonesia.
In the future, the Ministry of Industry and UNIDO are committed to continuing to expand the scope of cooperation, including in the industrial digitalization and circular economy sectors.
