ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s diplomatic community is in mourning following the tragic death of Zetro Leonardo Purba, a young diplomat at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Lima, Peru.
He was fatally shot by an unidentified assailant on Monday night, September 1, 2025, local time.
According to Panamericana Television, Zetro was shot three times at close range while cycling with his wife near their residence in the Lince district of Lima. He was rushed to Javier Prado Clinic, but doctors were unable to save his life. His wife survived the attack and is now under police protection.
Foreign Minister Sugiono: Indonesia Has Lost a Dedicated Diplomat
Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Sugiono, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Zetro. He confirmed that the Indonesian government has coordinated with Peruvian authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.
“This morning, we received heartbreaking news from Lima. Our colleague, Zetro Leonardo Purba, a staff member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, passed away after being shot by an unidentified individual,” Sugiono said in a video statement on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
Sugiono also revealed that he had personally called Zetro’s widow, Priscillia, to convey his condolences.
“The late Zetro leaves behind a wife and three children. We are deeply grieved by this tragedy,” he added.
Repatriation Process and Legal Follow-Up
Foreign Minister Sugiono has instructed Indonesia’s Ambassador in Lima, Ricky Suhendar, to closely monitor the investigation and to coordinate with Peruvian law enforcement. The government is also arranging for the repatriation of Zetro’s remains to Indonesia.
“We have asked the Indonesian Embassy in Lima to closely follow the case and to handle the repatriation process,” Sugiono emphasized.
A Promising Young Diplomat
Zetro Leonardo Purba had only been stationed in Peru for five months as Second Secretary for Chancery Affairs after serving at the Indonesian Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia.
He was widely respected by his peers as a hardworking and dedicated diplomat.
The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow among Indonesians and the international diplomatic community.
Lawmakers have urged both the Indonesian and Peruvian governments to ensure justice is served, not only for the sake of the victim’s family but also to uphold the dignity of Indonesia’s diplomatic mission abroad. (AT Network)
