ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) has officially named former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim as a suspect in the alleged corruption scandal involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops for the government’s digitalization program between 2019 and 2023.
The Attorney General’s Office spokesperson, Anang Supriatna, confirmed that the decision was based on strong evidence and witness testimonies.
“Based on the examination of witnesses and available evidence, this afternoon we have officially named a new suspect with the initials NAM,” Anang announced at a press conference in South Jakarta on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
Questioned Three Times, Accompanied by Hotman Paris
On the day of his indictment, Nadiem Makarim underwent his third round of questioning at the Attorney General’s Special Crimes Directorate (Jampidsus). The former Gojek CEO arrived at 8:55 a.m., accompanied by six lawyers, including the high-profile attorney Hotman Paris Hutapea.
When pressed by journalists, Nadiem only gave a brief statement: “I was summoned to provide testimony.”
Four Other Suspects Already Charged
Before naming Nadiem, prosecutors had already indicted four other suspects linked to the Chromebook procurement project:
Sri Wahyuningsih (SW) – Director of Elementary Schools, Ministry of Education
Mulatsyah (MUL) – Director of Junior High Schools, Ministry of Education
Jurist Tan (JT) – Special Staff to Minister Nadiem Makarim
Ibrahim Arif (IBAM) – Technology Consultant, Ministry of Education
One of the suspects, Jurist Tan, has been placed on the Interpol Red Notice list after being declared a fugitive. The request has been forwarded to Interpol’s headquarters in Lyon, France.
The Chromebook Corruption Scandal
The Chromebook corruption case stems from Indonesia’s ambitious education digitalization program launched in 2019. The multi-trillion-rupiah project was intended to supply laptops to schools nationwide, but prosecutors allege widespread irregularities and fraudulent practices.
The indictment of Nadiem Makarim marks a significant turning point in Indonesia’s fight against corruption in the education sector, raising public concerns over accountability and transparency in government procurement. (AT Network)
