ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The Provincial Government of Special Capital Region Jakarta has announced a clear ambition to position the capital as a global center for film and cultural development.
This direction was emphasized by Deputy Governor Rano Karno as he officially opened the 2025 Jakarta Arts Assembly (MKJ) at the Luwes Theater, Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ), Cikini, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.
Held under the theme “Jakarta as a Laboratory and Showcase of Global Culture,” the forum reflects the city’s ongoing transformation into a world-class metropolis anchored in creativity, culture, and innovation.
Film as a Strategic Pillar of Jakarta’s Global Identity
Rano stressed that film is not merely a form of entertainment, but a powerful tool through which a city tells its story to the world.
“Film is how a city expresses its diversity, its energy, and the spirit of its people,” he said.
He underlined that strengthening Jakarta’s film ecosystem is essential for building a culturally meaningful and globally inspiring city identity.
Jakarta’s Strategic Push to Build a World-Class Film Ecosystem
Rano outlined several priority initiatives currently being advanced by the Government of Jakarta:
1. Expanding cinema screens across the province, ensuring wider public access and stronger support for local productions.
2. Developing new international-standard film studios, enabling Jakarta to grow into a competitive production hub in Asia.
3. Establishing the Jakarta Film Committee to guide policy development and accelerate industry growth from upstream to downstream.
Training and talent development programs through IKJ and Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) are also being expanded. The government is further encouraging film projects that tell Jakarta’s story to enhance the city’s global cultural positioning.
Jakarta’s Momentum Toward Becoming a Global Creative City
The steps taken by Jakarta align with global trends seen in major creative capitals such as:
Seoul, which leveraged K-content to build global cultural influence.
London and New York, where culture and film play central roles in shaping world-city identities.

Studies of global creative economies show that cities investing in integrated film ecosystems—spanning infrastructure, incentives, cultural branding, and talent pipelines—gain significant economic and cultural advantages, including global visibility, tourism growth, and increased foreign investment.
With Indonesia’s film market expanding rapidly, rising cinema attendance, and the acceleration of streaming platforms seeking high-quality local content, Jakarta is well-positioned to become a leading film and cultural hub in Southeast Asia.

Rano concluded by expressing hope that the 2025 Jakarta Arts Assembly would produce concrete recommendations for strengthening Jakarta’s cultural development.
